What is a senior data engineer?

Senior Data Engineers are experienced professionals who design, build, and maintain large-scale data processing systems and infrastructure. They are responsible for developing data pipelines, managing databases, and ensuring the efficient flow and integrity of data across various platforms. Senior Data Engineers often collaborate with data scientists, analysts, and other engineers to support business intelligence and machine learning projects. They also play a key role in implementing best practices for data security, quality, and governance within an organization.

What are some common challenges senior data engineers face when integrating data from multiple sources?

Senior Data Engineers often encounter challenges such as inconsistent data formats, varying data quality, and differing update frequencies when integrating data from multiple sources. Addressing these issues requires designing robust ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) pipelines, implementing data validation checks, and collaborating closely with source system owners to ensure data integrity. Effective communication with cross-functional teams and leveraging scalable data integration tools are also essential to streamline the process and minimize errors.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior data engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Data Engineer, you need strong expertise in data modeling, ETL development, programming (such as Python or Scala), and a degree in computer science or a related field. Proficiency with big data technologies (like Hadoop, Spark), cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP), and database systems, as well as relevant certifications, is highly valuable. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills help you collaborate across teams and mentor junior engineers. These skills and qualities ensure robust, scalable data solutions that support organizational decision-making and growth.

What is the difference between Senior Data Engineer vs Data Scientist?

Senior Workface Planner

Play an integral role in transforming project plans into executable field activities that drive predictable construction performance, workforce productivity, and successful project delivery. As a Senior Workface Planner, you will operate at the intersection of engineering, procurement, construction, and project controls, ensuring work is properly planned, organized, and ready for execution before it reaches the field.

This is a highly visible project leadership role where your ability to organize work packages, align stakeholders, remove execution barriers, and improve field readiness directly impacts safety, schedule performance, labor productivity, and project costs. Your leadership will help maximize workforce efficiency while supporting Worley’s commitment to operational excellence and successful project delivery.

Purpose of the role

The Senior Workface Planner is responsible for providing planning, coordination, and project execution support to ensure construction work is performed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project schedules, budgets, and contractual requirements. You will develop and manage workface planning strategies that support construction execution while ensuring labor resources, materials, equipment, engineering deliverables, and work packages are aligned and available when required.

Working closely with Construction Managers, Project Managers, Superintendents, Engineering, Procurement, Project Controls, and field execution teams, you will establish work packaging processes, coordinate construction readiness activities, and support execution strategies that enable productive and predictable field operations.

This role serves as a key contributor to project success by ensuring field crews receive complete, executable work packages that minimize delays, improve productivity, and support safe and effective project execution.

You will be responsible for:
  • Leading workface planning activities for construction, maintenance, turnaround, or capital project execution.
  • Developing and maintaining construction work packages that support efficient field execution.
  • Coordinating engineering, procurement, construction, and project controls activities to ensure work is executable before release to the field.
  • Supporting construction management teams in developing project execution strategies, construction sequencing plans, and work packaging methodologies.
  • Ensuring labor, materials, equipment, permits, drawings, specifications, and supporting documentation are available to support planned work activities.
  • Identifying and removing constraints that could negatively impact productivity, schedule adherence, and construction readiness.
  • Reviewing engineering deliverables and construction documentation to determine work package requirements and execution priorities.
  • Coordinating with procurement and materials management teams to ensure critical materials and equipment are available to support work plans.
  • Supporting workforce planning, labor forecasting, resource allocation, and productivity improvement initiatives.
  • Monitoring work package readiness and maintaining construction readiness reports and performance metrics.
  • Collaborating with field supervision, craft personnel, and construction leadership to identify opportunities for improved execution efficiency.
  • Participating in planning meetings, schedule reviews, and construction coordination sessions.
  • Supporting project controls and scheduling teams through integration of workface planning data and construction progress information.
  • Identifying risks, execution challenges, and scheduling constraints while recommending mitigation strategies.
  • Assisting project teams in achieving schedule, cost, quality, and productivity objectives.
  • Supporting continuous improvement initiatives focused on work packaging, execution planning, productivity, and operational excellence.
  • Providing technical guidance and support to planners, coordinators, and project personnel as required.
