Senior Data Engineer information

What is a senior data engineer?

Senior Data Engineers are experienced professionals who design, build, and maintain large-scale data processing systems and infrastructure. They are responsible for developing data pipelines, managing databases, and ensuring the efficient flow and integrity of data across various platforms. Senior Data Engineers often collaborate with data scientists, analysts, and other engineers to support business intelligence and machine learning projects. They also play a key role in implementing best practices for data security, quality, and governance within an organization.

What are some common challenges senior data engineers face when integrating data from multiple sources?

Senior Data Engineers often encounter challenges such as inconsistent data formats, varying data quality, and differing update frequencies when integrating data from multiple sources. Addressing these issues requires designing robust ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) pipelines, implementing data validation checks, and collaborating closely with source system owners to ensure data integrity. Effective communication with cross-functional teams and leveraging scalable data integration tools are also essential to streamline the process and minimize errors.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior data engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Data Engineer, you need strong expertise in data modeling, ETL development, programming (such as Python or Scala), and a degree in computer science or a related field. Proficiency with big data technologies (like Hadoop, Spark), cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP), and database systems, as well as relevant certifications, is highly valuable. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills help you collaborate across teams and mentor junior engineers. These skills and qualities ensure robust, scalable data solutions that support organizational decision-making and growth.

What is the difference between Senior Data Engineer vs Data Scientist?

AspectSenior Data EngineerData Scientist
Required CredentialsBachelor's/Master's in CS, Engineering, or related; experience with data pipelinesBachelor's/Master's in CS, Statistics, or related; proficiency in statistical analysis and modeling
Work EnvironmentBuild and maintain data infrastructure, optimize data workflowsAnalyze data, develop predictive models, generate insights
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, finance, healthcare, where data engineering is essentialResearch, marketing, tech firms focusing on data analysis and modeling

While both roles work with data, Senior Data Engineers focus on developing and maintaining data infrastructure, whereas Data Scientists analyze data to generate insights and build models. They often collaborate but have distinct skill sets and responsibilities.

What do senior data engineers do?

Senior data engineers design, build, and maintain large-scale data pipelines and infrastructure to support data collection, storage, and analysis. They often work with tools like SQL, Spark, and cloud platforms, and may lead data team projects while ensuring data quality and security.

Job description

Why join our Strategy & Innovation Team?

This is not a traditional data engineering role.

Youโ€™ll be joining a newly created Strategy & Innovation team at a pivotal moment in its journey. As one of the early members of the group, youโ€™ll wonโ€™t just be executing a roadmap, youโ€™ll help shape it. From defining how data supports strategic decisionโ€‘making to enabling new AIโ€‘driven capabilities, your work will directly influence how the organization grows and innovates.

The team combines the energy and agility of a startup environment with the resources, scale, and longโ€‘term commitment of an established company. You'll work alongside ambitious professionals who enjoy solving complex problems, experimenting with new technologies, and turning ideas into tangible business impact. This role offers a unique opportunity to build foundational data capabilities from the ground up, contribute to highโ€‘visibility initiatives, and develop solutions that will be used across the organization. If you're excited by ownership, continuous learning, and the chance to help define what the future looks like, you'll feel right at home here.

What makes this opportunity especially exciting:
  • Be part of a newly established Strategy & Innovation function with significant visibility and executive support.
  • Help build the data foundations that will power analytics, AI, and strategic initiatives across the business.
  • Work on projects with real business impact, not isolated technical exercises.
  • Collaborate with an agile, and highly motivated team that values curiosity, experimentation, and execution.
  • Enjoy the rare combination of startupโ€‘like influence and enterpriseโ€‘level stability and resources.
What the role looks like:
  • Build and maintain data pipelines that ingest data from internal systems, thirdโ€‘party APIs, and external sources into our data platform.
  • Write Python scripts and SQL queries to extract, transform, and load data following established medallion architecture patterns (bronze โ†’ silver โ†’ gold).
  • Develop data quality checks and validation rules to catch issues early and ensure downstream analytics teams can trust the data.
  • Document data sources, transformation logic, and lineage so the team and business stakeholders understand what each dataset represents.
  • Collaborate with senior engineers on code reviews, sprint planning, and incident response, learning productionโ€‘grade engineering practices from day one.
  • Support analytics and reporting teams by responding to data requests, troubleshooting pipeline issues, and improving existing models.
  • Contribute to a modern cloudโ€‘based data stack (Azure, Databricks, dbt, Terraform), building skills that transfer anywhere in the industry.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related technical field.
  • 1-3 years of experience in Data Engineering, Analytics Engineering, Business Intelligence, Software Engineering, or a related dataโ€‘focused role.
  • Strong SQL skills and experience working with relational databases.
  • Proficiency in Python for data processing, automation, or ETL development.
  • Understanding of data modeling concepts and ETL/ELT processes.
  • Experience working with APIs and integrating data from multiple sources.
  • Familiarity with Git and collaborative software development practices.
  • Strong problemโ€‘solving skills and attention to data quality.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work with both technical and business stakeholders.
  • Curiosity, ownership mindset, and willingness to learn new technologies quickly.
