Senior Cs Core Network Engineer information

What is a Senior CS Core Network Engineer?

Senior CS Core Network Engineers are experienced professionals who design, implement, and maintain the core elements of a telecommunications network, specifically the Circuit Switched (CS) core. They ensure reliable voice and data communication by managing network components such as MSCs (Mobile Switching Centers), HLRs (Home Location Registers), and gateways. Their responsibilities also include troubleshooting, optimizing network performance, integrating new technologies, and supporting large-scale network upgrades. Typically, these engineers work closely with other network teams and vendors to maintain service quality and network security.

How does a Senior CS Core Network Engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during network upgrades or optimizations?

As a Senior CS Core Network Engineer, you will frequently collaborate with teams such as radio network engineers, transmission specialists, and IT support during network upgrades or optimization projects. This collaboration involves joint planning sessions, troubleshooting calls, and integrating solutions to ensure seamless voice and data services. You’ll often act as a technical lead, coordinating with vendors and internal stakeholders to implement changes with minimal service disruption. Effective communication and documentation are key, as you’ll need to translate complex core network requirements into actionable tasks for other teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior CS Core Network Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior CS Core Network Engineer, you need deep expertise in mobile core network architecture, signaling protocols (such as SS7, SIP, and Diameter), and a relevant engineering degree. Experience with core network equipment (e.g., Ericsson, Huawei, Nokia), network monitoring tools, and certifications like CCNP or vendor-specific credentials are typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help you collaborate with cross-functional teams and troubleshoot complex issues. These skills ensure reliable network performance, rapid resolution of outages, and the successful implementation of new services in telecom environments.

What is the difference between Senior Cs Core Network Engineer vs Network Operations Center (NOC) Engineer?

AspectSenior Cs Core Network EngineerNetwork Operations Center (NOC) Engineer
CertificationsCCNA, CCNP, Cisco certificationsCCNA, Network+
Work EnvironmentDesign, optimize, and troubleshoot core network infrastructureMonitor, maintain, and support network systems
Industry UsageTelecommunications, ISPs, large enterprisesTelecom providers, managed service providers

The Senior Cs Core Network Engineer focuses on designing and maintaining core network infrastructure, requiring advanced certifications and technical expertise. In contrast, a Network Operations Center (NOC) Engineer primarily monitors and supports existing networks, often working in a 24/7 environment. Both roles are vital in telecommunications and large enterprise networks but differ in scope and responsibilities.

Job description

The Senior Network Engineer will lead the evaluation of enterprise network systems, recommend scalable architectural resources, and identify/deploy advanced networking products to optimize service levels across multisite environments. This role focuses heavily on SD-WAN, Zero Trust security models, LAN/Data Center infrastructures, and core routing architectures. The role supports standards for low-latency, high-performance networks in high-traffic retail and omnichannel environments, recommending continuous enhancements for security, mobility, and access while serving as an escalation point for complex network issues and mentoring junior team members.
This role is located in Springfield MO, remote work not an option
Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Core Network & SD-WAN Optimization: Drive advances in SD-WAN, core routing, and switching architectures to increase the value delivered by enterprise network capabilities, improving environment efficiency and lowering total cost of technology operations.
  • Data Center & LAN Infrastructure: Design, select, and manage business-critical LAN, Data Center, and client/server network environments in line with industry best practices; provide third-line point of escalation for global network infrastructure solutions.
  • Zero Trust & Security Integration: Implement and enhance Zero Trust network access (ZTNA) frameworks, micro-segmentation, and security measures (e.g., next-gen firewalls, secure access service edge/SASE, and message encryption) to safeguard high-traffic, multisite connectivity.
  • Technical Architecture & Evaluation: Discuss and recommend technical developments to improve the quality, security, and scalability of core network routing, LAN/Data Center environments, and supporting digital infrastructure to better meet business needs.
  • Requirements & Performance Testing: Collect network and business requirements through interviews, workshops, and traffic/workflow analysis; perform network software/hardware testing, monitoring performance, and diagnosing complex latency or bottleneck issues.
  • Emerging Technology Research: Explore and develop a detailed understanding of emerging networking technologies (such as advancements in SD-WAN protocols, Zero Trust tools, and cloud routing) to evaluate their potential impact on the organization.
  • Troubleshooting & Incident Resolution: Provide fault isolation, deep-packet analysis, and root-cause resolution for complex core network, routing, and multisite SD-WAN challenges to limit downtime and ensure operational continuity.
  • Engineering Standards & Process Migration: Draft engineering standards, routing policies, and configuration specifications. Document "as-is" and "to-be" network states and execute migration plans to transition to modernized network capabilities.
  • Technical Leadership & Mentorship: Mentor associate and mid-level network engineers on complex troubleshooting, such as resolving wide area network (WAN) bottlenecks in high-priority, revenue-generating systems.
  • On-Call & Operational Support: Participate in an on-call rotation and provide flexible, rapid response to critical network outages or urgent security incidents to maintain system availability.
  • Continuous Capability Development: Maintain an in-depth understanding of core routing, Zero Trust, and LAN/WAN technologies, external regulations, and industry best practices through ongoing training, certifications, and specialist media.
Skills:
Required:
  • SD-WAN Architecture & Operations: Manages, configures, and optimizes SD-WAN overlays and underlays across multisite networks to ensure reliable, application-aware routing and high availability.
  • Zero Trust Security Strategy: Identifies, designs, and enforces Zero Trust network access control, micro-segmentation, and identity-driven access policies across the enterprise.
  • LAN & Data Center Networking: Oversees the design, deployment, and ongoing management of high-density Data Center fabrics, switching, leaf-spine architectures, and local area networks (LAN).
  • Core Network & Routing Mastery: Demonstrates advanced knowledge of core routing protocols (BGP, OSPF, EIGRP), WAN transport strategies, and traffic engineering in complex hybrid environments.
  • Network Scalability & Performance Management: Identifies appropriate measures for assessing network performance, validates metrics with key stakeholders, and implements optimizations for low-latency, high-traffic demands.
  • Troubleshooting & Fault Isolation: Methodically analyzes complex network failures, diagnoses routing or latency anomalies, and executes swift remediations to minimize business impact.
  • Technical Communication: Communicates and articulates complex network designs, security risks, and technical strategies in a clear, compelling manner tailored to both technical teams and leadership.
  • Risk Management & Security Compliance: Plans, identifies, and prioritizes network vulnerabilities and operational risks; develops proactive response plans to mitigate network and security threats.
  • Change Management: Identifies, verifies, and manages changes to enterprise network scope and infrastructure configurations using structured change management procedures.
  • Project Sequencing & Resource Execution: Organizes, schedules, and prioritizes infrastructure implementations and upgrades to ensure timely project delivery without business disruption.
