McNICHOLS is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer/Architect to join our growing IT team as we modernize our infrastructure and move toward a hybrid on-premises/cloud environment. This role is ideal for a hands-on technical professional with deep expertise in systems engineering who thrives in cross-functional collaboration and is passionate about building and improving enterprise infrastructure.
As a Systems Engineer, you'll play a key role in maintaining, enhancing, and supporting critical IT systems with a focus on Linux, storage, and virtualization. You'll work closely with other engineers and departments to troubleshoot complex issues, implement improvements, and support project-based initiatives.
Responsibilities
  • Design, build, support, and maintain enterprise infrastructure across compute, storage, and virtualization platforms (primarily on-premise with increasing hybrid integration)
  • Troubleshoot complex issues across systems and environments; provide root cause analysis and solutions
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Network, Security, Applications, and Helpdesk to ensure system stability and high availability
  • Lead improvements in system performance, reliability, automation, and scalability
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior systems administrators and engineers
  • Participate in planning and executing infrastructure projects including upgrades, migrations, and new deployments
  • Maintain detailed documentation of system configurations, processes, and procedures
  • Support compliance, security, and patching efforts across systems
  • Interface with vendors for hardware/software support and procurement
  • Assist with budget planning and technology selection for IT initiatives and lifecycle

Required Qualifications
  • Strong hands-on experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Red Hat Satellite Server
  • Experience with DevOps and Infrastructure as Code (IAC) using Ansible and Git (Bitbucket)
  • Shell scripting, automation, and common services like SSSD, SELinux, Postfix and BIND DNS
  • In-depth knowledge of enterprise storage systems (block, file and object), including provisioning and performance tuning with EverPure and HPE Alletra
  • Strong Experience with Virtualization technologies - VMware (Nutanix and Xen Server a plus)
  • Experience supporting Windows-based infrastructure, Active Directory, DNS and DHCP
  • Experience working in or supporting a hybrid cloud architecture and Hyperscaler solutions like AWS
  • Comfortable working in a team-oriented environment with the ability to prioritize tasks and work independently
  • Ability to travel to local data centers and respond to urgent system issues as needed

Preferred Skills
  • Familiarity with backup/recovery systems (Veeam) and disaster recovery planning
  • Experience with scripting languages like Python or PowerShell
  • Experience with Citrix CVAD
  • Exposure to Microsoft 365, Azure AD, AWS, and other cloud services is a plus
