Job description

RK&K is seeking a Senior Construction Inspector to join our Energy & Corrosion team. This position is responsible for providing senior-level field inspection, construction oversight, and project coordination services for natural gas, utility, and energy infrastructure projects.
The Senior Construction Inspector serves as RK&K's lead field representative, ensuring projects are constructed in accordance with approved plans, specifications, regulatory requirements, permit conditions, client standards, and industry best practices. This role will independently manage inspection activities on complex projects while providing guidance and mentorship to junior inspection staff.
The ideal candidate will have extensive experience inspecting natural gas distribution or transmission projects, pipeline construction, utility installations, site development, or related energy infrastructure projects.
Essential Functions
As a Senior Construction Inspector, you will:
  • Lead daily field inspection efforts for natural gas, energy, and utility construction projects.
  • Monitor contractor activities to verify compliance with approved plans, specifications, permits, regulations, client requirements, and quality standards.
  • Oversee complex construction activities including pipeline installation, facility construction, earthwork, grading, restoration, and erosion and sediment control measures.
  • Serve as the primary field liaison between RK&K, clients, contractors, regulatory agencies, and project stakeholders.
  • Prepare and review daily reports, field documentation, photographs, quantity tracking, inspection records, and project correspondence.
  • Identify, document, and communicate construction issues, non-conforming work, safety concerns, and schedule impacts to project leadership.
  • Verify materials, equipment, testing procedures, and workmanship meet project requirements and applicable industry standards.
  • Monitor environmental permit compliance, including erosion and sediment control, stormwater management, and restoration requirements.
  • Review contractor testing, inspection reports, quality control documentation, and material certifications.
  • Coordinate resolution of field conflicts and provide recommendations to project managers, engineers, and clients.
  • Participate in project meetings and provide updates regarding project progress, quality, safety, risks, and compliance.
  • Support project scheduling, constructability reviews, punch list development, final inspections, and project closeout activities.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior inspectors and field staff.
  • Promote and monitor adherence to project safety requirements and industry best practices.
  • Support client relationship management through responsive communication and proactive issue resolution.

Required Skills and Experience
  • Seven (7)+ years of construction inspection, construction management, or construction oversight experience on utility, pipeline, civil, or energy infrastructure projects.
  • Experience serving as a lead inspector or senior field representative on complex construction projects.
  • Strong experience reading and interpreting construction plans, specifications, permits, standards, and contract documents.
  • Extensive knowledge of natural gas, pipeline, utility, or site development construction practices.
  • Knowledge of erosion and sediment control requirements, environmental compliance regulations, and permitting requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage construction inspection assignments and prioritize multiple project demands.
  • Ability to prepare detailed and accurate field documentation, inspection reports, and project records.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively interact with contractors, clients, regulators, and project teams.
  • Experience identifying construction risks and recommending solutions to resolve field issues.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel to project sites.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and electronic field reporting systems.

Preferred Skills and Experience
  • Experience inspecting natural gas distribution and/or transmission construction projects.
  • Familiarity with CFR Part 192 requirements.
  • Knowledge of cathodic protection and corrosion control systems.
  • Experience with station, regulator station, gate station, compressor station, or pipeline facility construction.
  • Utility or energy project experience.
  • Experience monitoring ESCGP-4, NPDES, and environmental permit compliance.
  • NICET, OSHA 10/30, AMPP (formerly NACE), API, or other relevant industry certifications.
  • Experience with GIS, ArcGIS, field data collection platforms, or electronic construction management software.
  • Experience supervising, mentoring, or coordinating junior inspectors and field personnel.
