What is a senior computer vision engineer?

Senior Computer Vision Engineers are experienced professionals who design, develop, and optimize computer vision algorithms and systems. They typically work on advanced projects involving image and video analysis, object detection, facial recognition, and related technologies. These engineers often lead teams, set technical direction, and collaborate with other departments to integrate computer vision solutions into products or services. Their role requires strong expertise in programming, machine learning, and mathematics, as well as staying current with the latest research in the field.

What are some common challenges faced by a senior computer vision engineer when deploying models to production environments?

One common challenge for Senior Computer Vision Engineers is ensuring that models perform reliably in real-world conditions, which often differ significantly from controlled training datasets. Handling variations in lighting, angles, and image quality can impact model accuracy, requiring ongoing data collection and retraining. Additionally, optimizing models for efficiency and latency is crucial when deploying to edge devices or cloud platforms, and collaboration with DevOps and software engineering teams is essential to integrate solutions seamlessly into production pipelines.

Job description

About Lockheed Martin Space:
Space is a critical domain, connecting our technologies, our security, and our humanity. While others view space as a destination, we see it as a realm of possibilities, where we can do more - we can innovate, invest, inspire, and integrate our capabilities to transform the future.
About the Team:
You'll collaborate with some of the brightest minds in engineering to design and integrate pioneering capabilities that shape the future of our mission. Our high impact, cross functional team delivers cutting edge perception solutions for a variety of mission critical platforms. We specialize in classical computer vision algorithms-feature detection, stereo matching, optical flow-while also integrating modern AI techniques such as semantic segmentation and learned feature representations. Every solution is engineered with the strict hardware constraints of resource limited processors in mind, including the ultra low power, radiation hardened CPUs typical of space borne systems.
About the Role:
LockheedMartin is seeking a proactive Associate Manager to lead a high performing team within our Computer Vision group. This group spans optics, camera modeling, simulation & testing, algorithm development, software engineering, and CI/CD. While deep technical expertise in every area is not required, the ideal candidate will understand the breadth of the discipline and leverage that context to enable the team's success.
In this position you will be a manager for a group of engineers, responsible for:
Conducting regular 1:1s (at least every other week), delivering continuous feedback, and providing career guidance and coaching
Delegating work effectively, ensuring tasks are matched to skill sets and development goals.
Driving agile framework execution (scrum/kanban), managing the backlog, and facilitating sprint ceremonies
Reporting Earned Value Management (EVM) metrics against agile commitments managing schedule and budget
Communicating progress and technical status to internal and external stakeholders through clear presentations and written reports
Partnering with product managers, architects, and cross functional leads to align technical priorities with mission requirements
Championing continuous improvement of team processes, fostering a collaborative culture, and supporting the adoption of CI/CD best practices across the group.
Deriving, authoring, and maintaining clear, testable software and system requirements originating from top level requirements and mission needs
Generally has 5+ years of related experience and may have a post-secondary degree or training in a related discipline.
