What is a senior computer vision engineer?

Senior Computer Vision Engineers are experienced professionals who design, develop, and optimize computer vision algorithms and systems. They typically work on advanced projects involving image and video analysis, object detection, facial recognition, and related technologies. These engineers often lead teams, set technical direction, and collaborate with other departments to integrate computer vision solutions into products or services. Their role requires strong expertise in programming, machine learning, and mathematics, as well as staying current with the latest research in the field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior computer vision engineer?

To thrive as a Senior Computer Vision Engineer, you need a deep understanding of computer vision algorithms, strong programming skills (especially in Python or C++), and a background in mathematics or related fields, often supported by a master's or PhD. Proficiency with machine learning frameworks (such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, or OpenCV), and experience with version control systems are typically required. Exceptional problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and leadership skills help in collaborating with teams and driving innovation. These skills ensure the development of robust vision solutions, efficient project execution, and alignment with organizational goals.

What are some common challenges faced by a senior computer vision engineer when deploying models to production environments?

One common challenge for Senior Computer Vision Engineers is ensuring that models perform reliably in real-world conditions, which often differ significantly from controlled training datasets. Handling variations in lighting, angles, and image quality can impact model accuracy, requiring ongoing data collection and retraining. Additionally, optimizing models for efficiency and latency is crucial when deploying to edge devices or cloud platforms, and collaboration with DevOps and software engineering teams is essential to integrate solutions seamlessly into production pipelines.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead the design, development, and deployment of software solutions for Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs).

  • Integrate AMR software with enterprise platforms and build data tools for fleet health monitoring.

Job description

Senior IT Software Engineer – AMR & Robotics

Location: Guntersville, AL | Full-Time | Senior Level

About the Role

Ready to drive the next generation of autonomous systems in smart manufacturing? We are seeking a highly skilled Senior IT Software Engineer to lead the design, development, and deployment of software solutions for our fleet of Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) in Guntersville, AL. Serving as a key technical leader, you will split your time between driving strategic software initiatives in the office and troubleshooting complex systems hands-on on the factory floor. This role is critical for scaling our robotics operations, ensuring fleet reliability, and mentoring junior engineers.

What You’ll Do

As the subject matter expert for AMR software and system integration, you will lead the architecture and implementation of scalable software for our AMR fleet, making key design decisions across navigation, perception, and control systems. You will write core software components in C++ and Python—including algorithms for path planning, localization (SLAM), motion planning, and computer vision—while managing complex software projects from concept to completion.

A significant portion of your role will involve direct factory floor engagement: working alongside operations, maintenance, and automation teams to troubleshoot complex real-time issues and resolve systemic interactions between AMRs and industrial equipment. Additionally, you will lead the integration of AMR software with enterprise platforms (MES, WMS, ERP), build data tools for fleet health monitoring, and mentor junior team members.

What We’re Looking For

We are seeking candidates with a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Robotics, or a related field, along with 5+ years of professional software engineering experience centered on robotics and automation systems. You must demonstrate expert-level proficiency in C++ and Python, extensive experience with ROS (Robot Operating System), and deep expertise in designing complex software architectures. Essential technical background includes hands-on work with Git, Linux, robotics simulation environments, industrial protocols, and industrial automation tools like PLCs and SCADA.

Preferred credentials include validated certifications in ROS or IEEE’s CSDP, experience leading engineering teams, and specialized certifications in cloud platforms, AI/ML, or cybersecurity for robotics.

What We Offer

We support our senior leadership with a competitive compensation package and comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance options. You will enjoy generous paid time off (PTO) and company-recognized paid holidays to maintain a great work-life balance. To help secure your long-term financial future, we offer a robust 401(k) retirement plan with an immediate company match, alongside continuous opportunities for career growth within an expanding smart factory environment.

Work Environment & Travel

This position operates in a mixed environment spent across the active factory floor and an office setting, with light travel to affiliate locations expected at around 10%. Candidates must be comfortable working around moving machinery and maintain on-call availability for critical operational issues.
