Senior Computer Science Bioinformatics information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior computer science bioinformatics professional?

To thrive as a Senior Computer Science Bioinformatics professional, you need advanced knowledge in computational biology, programming (such as Python, R, or Java), and a strong background in molecular biology or genomics, often supported by a graduate degree (MSc or PhD). Proficiency with bioinformatics tools (like BLAST, GATK, or Bioconductor), high-performance computing environments, and version control systems (e.g., Git) is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, analytical thinking, and effective collaboration skills set top performers apart in this field. These competencies are crucial for managing complex biological datasets, developing innovative algorithms, and driving impactful research in interdisciplinary teams.

How does a senior computer science bioinformatics professional typically collaborate with multidisciplinary teams?

Senior Computer Science Bioinformatics professionals often work closely with biologists, clinicians, statisticians, and software engineers to analyze complex biological datasets. They are responsible for translating biological questions into computational problems, developing algorithms or pipelines, and ensuring that results are accurate and actionable. Effective communication and collaboration are essential, as they must bridge the gap between technical and scientific teams, lead project discussions, and sometimes mentor junior team members. This collaborative environment fosters innovation and helps drive research projects or clinical applications forward.

What does a senior computer science bioinformatics professional do?

A Senior Computer Science Bioinformatics professional applies advanced computational methods and software development techniques to analyze biological data, such as DNA, RNA, and protein sequences. They design and implement algorithms, manage large datasets, and collaborate with biologists to interpret results for research or clinical purposes. Their work often supports discoveries in genomics, drug development, and personalized medicine. In addition to technical expertise, they may lead teams, mentor junior staff, and oversee complex projects.

Job description

Role Summary:

Fore Bio is a next-generation precision oncology company focused on the development of plixorafenib, an investigational, novel, small-molecule, next-generation, orally available selective inhibitor of mutated BRAF.

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior Scientist to join our growing research team. The successful candidate will lead the development and application of computational tools and pipelines to analyze large-scale biological datasets, including genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and clinical data. This individual will play a key role in interpreting complex biological data to support drug discovery, biomarker identification, and clinical development. This role is focused on supporting biomarker discovery, patient stratification, and translational research. It is important for this individual to have knowledge in observational research, cancer biology and bioinformatics with strong statistical programming skillset, and experience managing complex analyses.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead the analysis and interpretation of multi-omics datasets to support internal research and external collaborations
  • Play a critical role in identifying and characterizing oncogenic mutations and gene fusions relevant to precision medicine
  • Integrate public and proprietary datasets for hypothesis generation, uncovering mutation/fusion driven disease, informing drug targeting strategies, and supporting diagnostic and therapeutic development
  • Analyze large-scale biological data, such as gene expression, copy-number, mutation, methylation, next-generation sequencing and perform clinicogenomics analysis to support publications
    • Analyze translational and biomarker data for clinical-stage oncology programs with a focus on mechanism of action, target engagement, PK/PD/efficacy relationships, patient selection strategies and mechanisms of intrinsic and acquired resistance.
  • Designs, implements and executes experiments in preclinical models and generates translational datasets to inform biomarker strategy, dose and schedule optimization, patient selection, combination approaches, and mechanisms of drug response and resistance as an additional responsibility.
  • Initiate and manage contract studies with CROs
  • Collaborate with cross functional team members, CROs, data scientists, and clinicians to translate computational findings into actionable insights
  • Independently builds, aligns, and executes technical plans to achieve objectives across multiple programs
  • Impacts discovery programs through both direct and indirect contribution as a member of the project team
  • Effectively communicate study findings through internal presentations, assist in drafting conference abstracts and manuscripts for publication in peer reviewed journals.
  • Contribute to scientific publications, regulatory filings, and intellectual property
  • Stay current with advances in bioinformatics, machine learning, and relevant technologies
  • Travel up to 10% of the time, based upon program needs

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:

  • PhD in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Genomics, or related field with 3+ years of postdoctoral or industry experience; or Master’s with 7+ years of relevant experience
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, and Bash for ‘omics analysis and data visualization
  • Deep understanding of genomics high-throughput sequencing technologies (e.g., NGS, WGS, WTS, RNA-seq, etc.) and data formats (e.g., FASTQ, BAM/CRAM, VCF, GTF)
  • Experience with cloud computing (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and workflow management tools (e.g., Nextflow, Snakemake, WDL)
  • Experience in developing analysis plans and conducting analysis for studies using large real-world observational data or with multi-omics databases.
  • Experience running bioinformatics pipelines and familiarity with bioinformatics methods and tools
  • Understanding of novel analytical or computational (machine learning) techniques and data science to integrate and mine large complex data is a plus
  • Experience working with and managing central laboratories and CROs supporting biomarker analysis or preclinical studies is preferred
  • A strong record of outstanding technical, collaboration and communication skills
  • Strong background in tumor biology, molecular science, statistical data analysis and biological interpretation
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven track record of scientific publications or impactful contributions to bioinformatics research
  • Experience in precision oncology, rare disease, immunology, or neuroscience
  • Familiarity with machine learning techniques applied to biological data
  • Experience with data visualization and dashboard tools (e.g., Shiny, Dash, Tableau)
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements for clinical bioinformatics in a pharma or diagnostics setting
  • Highly motivated, decisive, and results-oriented individual with the flexibility and creativity to excel in and contribute to a rapidly growing company.
