Senior Computer Science Bioinformatics information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Computer Science Bioinformatics professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Computer Science Bioinformatics professional, you need advanced knowledge in computational biology, programming (such as Python, R, or Java), and a strong background in molecular biology or genomics, often supported by a graduate degree (MSc or PhD). Proficiency with bioinformatics tools (like BLAST, GATK, or Bioconductor), high-performance computing environments, and version control systems (e.g., Git) is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, analytical thinking, and effective collaboration skills set top performers apart in this field. These competencies are crucial for managing complex biological datasets, developing innovative algorithms, and driving impactful research in interdisciplinary teams.

How does a Senior Computer Science Bioinformatics professional typically collaborate with multidisciplinary teams?

Senior Computer Science Bioinformatics professionals often work closely with biologists, clinicians, statisticians, and software engineers to analyze complex biological datasets. They are responsible for translating biological questions into computational problems, developing algorithms or pipelines, and ensuring that results are accurate and actionable. Effective communication and collaboration are essential, as they must bridge the gap between technical and scientific teams, lead project discussions, and sometimes mentor junior team members. This collaborative environment fosters innovation and helps drive research projects or clinical applications forward.

What does a Senior Computer Science Bioinformatics professional do?

A Senior Computer Science Bioinformatics professional applies advanced computational methods and software development techniques to analyze biological data, such as DNA, RNA, and protein sequences. They design and implement algorithms, manage large datasets, and collaborate with biologists to interpret results for research or clinical purposes. Their work often supports discoveries in genomics, drug development, and personalized medicine. In addition to technical expertise, they may lead teams, mentor junior staff, and oversee complex projects.

As healthcare IT experts, Apex is committed to building systems that enable healthcare organizations to communicate and exchange data seamlessly across different systems and devices.

Summary:

Goldbelt Apex is seeking a qualified Bioinformatician to provide data management and bioinformatics support services. This role involves managing epidemiological and laboratory data by utilizing various software packages in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, particularly within the Division of Viral Diseases and the Viral Vaccine Preventable Diseases Branch (VVPDB).

Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions:

Support the design, development, and implementation of surveillance tools to collect epidemiologic data for Viral Vaccine-Preventable Disease Programs through the following tasks:

  • Maintain epidemiological and laboratory data by using SAS as well as other data management software packages (e.g., R, REDCap, Microsoft Access, Excel, EpiInfo)
  • Support the design, development, and implementation of surveillance tools to collect epidemiologic data
  • Convert existing datasets from a diverse array of file formats (e.g., Microsoft Excel, Access, SQL, and ASCII files) into SAS datasets
  • Design, program, test, modify, enhance, maintain, and support new surveillance applications to collect epidemiological data
  • Develop scripts and software for data manipulation, cleaning, analysis, and visualization (using programming languages such as Python, R, BASH, and SQL)
  • Develop bioinformatics pipelines using parallel programming capabilities through workflow tools, including Snakemake or Nextflow, on Linux-based high-performance computing environments
  • Transform data sources into appropriate file formats for bioinformatics/epidemiological studies
  • Conduct data mining and data curation from public sequence databases to support bioinformatics and molecular epidemiological analyses
  • Work with and/or develop dashboarding tools, including Power BI, Tableau, and R Shiny, to manage and visualize laboratory and epidemiological data
  • Submit monthly progress report, detailing achievements and progress on sub-tasks a-i. Please also indicate any project obstacles that need to be overcome
