COUNTY OF GREENE JOB VACANCY
POSITION: Telecommunicator 1 (Regular Full Time)
DEPARTMENT: 911 Communications
SALARY: $17.75/HR (SEIU Master Unit)
HOURS: Regular Full Time
40 hours per week
(Hours/ Shifts Vary)
BENEFITS: Health, Vision & Dental - First of month following date of hire

OVERALL OBJECTIVE OF THE JOB;
To perform work involved with emergency services dispatching from a centralized public safety answering point/communications center.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB;
  1. Receives training in emergency service response, first aid and communications equipment operations.
  2. Performs in accordance with Greene County Department of Emergency Services/9-1-1 policy, orders and statements of procedures and protocol.
  3. Receives telephone calls from the public concerning emergency and non-emergency situations related to law enforcement, medical, fire, disasters and other related incidents.
  4. Records pertinent information and transmits same to agencies and individuals.

Maintains records and reports of activities. Makes referrals to other public service agencies when appropriate.
  1. May provide pre-arrival instructions to caller, utilizing established protocol and procedure.
  2. Monitors and operates telephones, radios, alarm panels, video monitors, tape recorders, computers and all other equipment located within or controlled by the Department of Emergency Services/9-1-1 facility.
  3. Uses a wide variety of radio frequencies to inform and coordinate activities of participating emergency service agencies.
  4. Maintains a safe working environment and takes care to protect all equipment and materials associated with the Department of Emergency Services /9-1-1 facility.
  5. Assists Department of Emergency Services /9-1-1 during times of natural or man-made disasters that occur in or could affect the population of Greene County.
  6. Provides for general cleanliness and order within the Department of Emergency Services /9-1-1 facility.

OTHER DUTIES OF THE JOB:
  1. Assists in training of new employees.
  2. Suggests improved communications practices.
  3. Performs other reasonably related duties as assigned by the Department of Emergency Services/9-1-1 facility employees operating in a supervisory capacity.
  4. May be asked to give talks or lectures to community groups at the Department of Emergency Services/9-1-1 facility or in the field.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Works under the general supervision of a 911 coordinator, a senior telecommunicator and/or the Department of Emergency Services Director.
SUPERVISION GIVEN:
Performs supervision as required or directed.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  1. Works indoors in adequate workspace, temperatures, ventilation and lighting.
  2. Requires long periods of sitting, adjusting to changing shifts and days off.
  3. Exposure to a stressful environment, including a window-less, no smoking situation, with little chance for breaks.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL CONDITIONS:
  1. Must possess ability to record, convey and present information, explain procedures and follow instructions.
  2. Must be able to sit for long periods throughout the workday.
  3. Dexterity requirements range from coordinated movements of fingers/hands for computer work to simple dexterity of feet/legs; torso necessary to carry out duties of the job.
  4. Must be able to pay close attention to details and concentrate on work.
  5. Must be able to work all three shifts; day, afternoon and midnight.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. EDUCATION/TRAINING

High School diploma or equivalent. Some computer training and basic typing skills required.
  1. WORK EXPERIENCE

Minimum of two (2) years of clerical experience of progressively responsible nature in an office environment, or any equivalent combination of experience and/or training.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
  1. Must possess the ability to gain knowledge of the community, including major facilities highways, streets, landmarks, etc.
  2. Must possess the ability to gain knowledge of various communications and emergency response procedures.
  3. Must possess working knowledge of business English, spelling, grammar, typing skills and computer skills.
  4. Must possess the ability to read maps.
  5. Must possess skills in reading and understanding complex technical documents written in English, such as laws, ordinances, procedures, training manuals, computer printouts, and public safety reports.
  6. Must possess skills in observing, remembering and recording facts, and details such as those contained in oral and written directives, radio communications, and telephone communications.
  7. Must possess the ability to organize and analyze a variety of information and apply selected knowledge, which is learned after employment, in order to decide on an appropriate and reasonable course of action.
  8. Must possess the ability to exercise tact, self-restraint, judgment, and strategy in dealing with a wide variety of people in various emotional states.
