NO RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT-SUMMER LIFEGUARDS: Due to the nationwide lifeguard shortage, residency is NOT a requirement for the seasonal lifeguard position in the City of Buffalo. Distinguishing Features of the Class The Senior Citizens Specialist assists in organizing and carrying out programs and activities of a social, educational and physical nature for adults over 60 years of age. Work is performed at various community centers gearing toward improving the status and condition of the senior citizen so that he/she can remain independent and live a dignified life in the community

Immediate supervision is received from the Senior Citizens Specialist Supervisor. Supervision may be exercised over subordinates/personnel assigned. Examples of work (Illustration Only) Works directly with older persons and their delegates to identify agencies and/or individuals in support of programs and services for senior citizens, i.e

assisting senior citizens in filling out various forms, etc. - provides information about services available such as social services, food stamps, etc; - refers senior citizens to appropriate agencies, i.e. Home Health Care, Meals-on-Wheels, etc

Conducts activities in community centers to meet the needs of adults over 60 years of age such as arts and crafts, exercise programs, pleasure and shopping trips, movies, speakers, dance classes, ceramics, monthly dances, etc. Assists in ordering, planning and overseeing the distribution of daily lunches; - maintains records and money collected for this program. Supervises and participates in making certain the community center is properly supplied and cleaned; Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications PROMOTIONAL Continuous and permanent status in the Department of Community Services as a Senior Citizen Aide for one year. OPEN COMPETITIVE (A) Masters, Bachelor, or associate's degree from an accredited college or university in Gerontology, Social Sciences, Public Health or a closely related field; OR (B) Graduation from High School, GED or Equivalency Diploma and two years of full-time experience in areas directly related to service programs for senior citizens; OR (C) Four years of full-time experience in areas directly related to service programs for senior citizens; OR (D) An equivalent combination as defined within limits of A, B and C. Acceptable educational requirements: Psychology, Sociology, Human Services, Counseling, Recreation, or Public Administration.

NOTE: Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated to meet full-time experience requirements.
