What is a senior CAD engineer?

Senior CAD Engineers are experienced professionals who use Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software to create detailed technical drawings and plans for products, systems, or structures. They often lead design projects, mentor junior team members, and ensure that designs meet industry standards and project requirements. Their work is crucial in fields such as engineering, architecture, and manufacturing, where precise and efficient design is essential. Senior CAD Engineers typically collaborate with other engineers, architects, and project managers to bring concepts to life and solve complex design challenges.

What are some common challenges senior CAD engineers face when working on multidisciplinary teams?

Senior CAD Engineers frequently collaborate with professionals from various disciplines, such as mechanical, electrical, and civil engineering. One of the main challenges is ensuring that complex design models are compatible across different software platforms and meet the specific requirements of each discipline. Effective communication and coordination are essential to avoid design conflicts, manage revisions, and maintain project timelines. Adapting to evolving project specifications and integrating feedback efficiently are also key aspects of the role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior CAD engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior CAD Engineer, you need advanced proficiency in computer-aided design, a strong background in engineering principles, and a relevant degree such as mechanical or electrical engineering. Expertise with CAD software like AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or CATIA, as well as knowledge of industry standards and possibly certifications like Certified SolidWorks Professional (CSWP), is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help you collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and manage complex projects. These skills and qualifications are essential for delivering precise, innovative designs and ensuring project success in competitive engineering environments.

What is the difference between Senior Cad Engineer vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectSenior Cad EngineerMechanical Design Engineer
Required CredentialsCAD certifications, engineering degreeEngineering degree, CAD proficiency
Work EnvironmentDesign departments, engineering firmsProduct development, manufacturing
Employer & Industry UsageEngineering firms, construction, manufacturingAutomotive, aerospace, consumer products

While both roles require CAD skills and engineering knowledge, a Senior Cad Engineer typically focuses on leading design projects and CAD management, whereas a Mechanical Design Engineer concentrates on creating and developing mechanical components and systems. The Senior Cad Engineer often supervises CAD workflows, while the Mechanical Design Engineer emphasizes product innovation and detailed design work.

IMMI is a dynamic organization serving more than eleven markets and hundreds of customers across multiple countries. IMMI is also home to IMMI VIP steering wheels and CAPE®, the world’s leading state-of-the-art testing facility.

Job Summary:

The Senior CAD Designer plays a critical role in driving innovative and technically sound designs that support the development of new and sustaining products. This role collaborates closely with cross-functional engineering teams to translate concepts into detailed CAD models and drawings, using industry best practices and a deep understanding of manufacturing processes and design intent.

This individual leads by example in creating intelligent manufacturable designs, mentoring team members, and supporting the global CAD infrastructure. The ideal candidate is a skilled designer, an excellent communicator, and a proactive problem solver who helps shorten development timelines, elevate product quality, and contribute to long-term company growth.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with engineers to design and develop both new and sustaining components and systems, using minimal viable product (MVP) principles to accelerate innovation and product development.
  • Translate design intent into detailed 3D models, assemblies, and engineering drawings using industry-standard CAD software, with minimal supervision.
  • Support the New Product Development (NPD) process by contributing to fast-paced concept-to-handoff cycles, ensuring design feasibility, manufacturability, and quality.
  • Develop component and system designs aligned with engineering best practices using various materials and manufacturing methods, including stamping, blanking, forming, fine blanking, injection and thermoset molding, die and investment casting, cold forming, extruding, and draw forming.
  • Perform detailed tolerance stack-up analysis and apply GD&T principles to ensure dimensional accuracy and compliance with functional and manufacturing requirements.
  • Work collaboratively across departments—including Testing, Manufacturing, Quality, Purchasing, and Finance—to execute design projects efficiently and align deliverables with broader business goals.
  • Ensure accuracy and consistency of all design documentation, including CAD models, drawings, BOMs, and metadata within the PDM/PLM system.
  • Support the creation and procurement of prototype components, including part ordering and tracking for build readiness.
  • Resolve CAD-related issues and provide ongoing support and mentoring to junior designers; contribute to CAD training efforts and system optimization.
  • Participate in and lead design reviews, DFM/DFA evaluations, and other validation activities to incorporate stakeholder feedback and drive continuous improvement.
  • Maintain and contribute to the development of CAD standards, templates, fixture libraries, and automated tools to enhance design efficiency.
  • Provide global CAD support for modeling, drawing generation, and fixture design, ensuring consistency and integration across regional teams.
  • Proactively manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously, meeting deadlines while maintaining high standards of design integrity and product performance.
  •  Fully support and comply with all company programs, policies, and strategic objectives.
  • Perform other administrative duties in support of core responsibilities and departmental operations.

Skills & Qualifications:

Required:

  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Design, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of hands-on CAD design experience in a manufacturing or engineering environment.
  • Proficient in 3D CAD software such as SolidWorks, CATIA, Siemens NX, or AutoCAD.
  • Advanced knowledge of GD&T, tolerance stack-up analysis, and design for manufacturability (DFM/DFA).
  • Demonstrated expertise in the use of engineering software, systems, and manual tools for part and assembly design.
  • Experience in designing with plastics, sheet metal, and other common manufacturing materials and processes.
  • Guide engineers in proper design considerations for manufacturability.
  • Experience with mechanisms.
  • Hands on experience fabricating, building preferred.
  • Ability to visualize and create models of components given limited direction.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing and assembly methodologies, design constraints, and production processes.
  • Develop component and systems designs aligned with engineering best practices using various materials and manufacturing methods, including stamping, blanking, forming, fine blanking injection and thermoset molding, die and investment casting, cold forming, extruding, and draw forming.
