POSITION SUMMARY
Position Title: Senior Inspector / Senior Engineering Technician
Department: CMT
Reports to: CMT Program Manager
Employment Status: Full-time
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Effective Date: 04/10/2023
The successful candidate will be responsible for performing inspections and testing services for various construction materials, such as soils, foundations, retaining walls, reinforced concrete, structural masonry, fire-proofing, and post-tensioned concrete. The role requires a thorough understanding of project drawings, specifications, and building codes, as well as the ability to perform field tests in accordance with industry standards.
Key responsibilities include conducting special inspections for project document and code compliance, documenting observations and discrepancies, and effectively communicating with project staff and construction teams. The candidate must possess excellent oral and written communication skills, attention to detail, and a willingness to work in varying weather conditions.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
• Understand and execute written and verbal directions, including reviewing specifications for civil and structural plans
• Communicate daily with contractors, technicians, and project managers
• Perform tests, inspections, and observations according to project requirements and applicable standards, such as ASTM, ACI, AASHTO, and DOT
• Submit daily field reports to document testing, inspections, and field observations; identify and communicate non-conforming items to project supervision
• Clean, maintain, and calibrate assigned equipment, adhering to relevant codes and standards
• Transport, operate, and care for a nuclear density gauge, following safety and maintenance guidelines outlined in the Radiation Safety Program Policy
• Review and understand project-related drawings, specifications, and building codes; perform Special Inspections to ensure compliance
• Maintain and update relevant certifications, such as ACI, ICC, CWI, NICET, or PTI
• Work in varying weather conditions, adhering to safety protocols
• Ensure timely completion of inspection and testing tasks to meet project deadlines
• Collaborate with team members and provide technical guidance when needed
Individuals may perform other duties as assigned, notwithstanding work in other functional areas to cover absences and relief, to equalize peak work periods or otherwise to balance the workload.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES)
• High School Diploma or equivalent
• A minimum of five years of experience in inspection and construction testing of soil, concrete, masonry, and/or asphalt materials
• Strong understanding of project-related drawings, specifications, and building codes
• Knowledge of testing and inspection methods, as well as industry standards, such as ASTM, ACI, AASHTO, and DOT
• ACI Field Grade I Certification required
• At least one ICC Certification, such as ICC Soils, ICC Reinforced Concrete, ICC Structural Masonry, ICC Spray-Applied Fireproofing, or ICC Structural Steel and Bolting
• Effective oral and written communication skills, with the ability to clearly document and report observations, test results, and non-conforming items
• Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate with team members and interact professionally with contractors, technicians, and project managers
• Detail-oriented and organized, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines
• Basic computer skills, including proficiency in using field data collection software and Microsoft Office Suite
• Willingness and ability to work in varying weather conditions and adhere to safety protocols
• Ability to transport, operate, and care for equipment, such as a nuclear density gauge, following safety and maintenance guidelines
• Valid driver's license and reliable transportation for travel to job sites
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES)
• All ICC certifications are a plus
• Other materials testing certifications from nationally recognized organizations such as CWI, NICET, or PTI Level I or II, are considered beneficial but not required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
Position entails work in both indoor and outdoor environments with potential exposure to weather conditions.
