Job description

Farnsworth Group is seeking a Mechanical Project Engineer - Healthcare in one of the posting locations below. The Mechanical Project Engineer - Healthcare leads project-level mechanical design and coordination for hospitals, ambulatory care, behavioral health/recovery centers, and medical office facilities across the Midwest. Working within a multi-disciplinary team, this role focuses on design execution, technical coordination, and mentoring junior staff under the guidance of mechanical managers and senior technical leads.
Posting Locations for this role: Lisle, Normal, Peoria, or Springfield, IL; or St. Louis, MO
What You'll Do
  • Act as project mechanical engineer on healthcare and institutional projects, managing day-to-day mechanical design delivery and coordination.
  • Design HVAC and mechanical systems (air distribution, hydronic systems, central plant connections, pressurization, and related medical gas interfaces), including load calculations, equipment sizing, layouts, narratives, drawings, and specifications.
  • Coordinate mechanical designs in BIM (Revit) with architectural, structural, electrical, plumbing, and technology disciplines to produce fully coordinated construction documents.
  • Perform field surveys and site investigations to document existing conditions and inform renovation or expansion work.
  • Support energy and system comparison studies and life-cycle cost evaluations in collaboration with senior staff.
  • Assist with construction administration, including review of submittals and RFIs and participation in site observations and punch lists.
  • Apply and help enforce applicable codes and standards (IMC, IBC, NFPA, ASHRAE, ASHRAE 170, NFPA 99, FGI Guidelines) for projects in Illinois, Missouri, and neighboring jurisdictions.
  • Provide guidance and QA redlines to designers and junior engineers; support project managers and mechanical managers with scope, level-of-effort, and schedule input.

What You'll Need
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering; EIT required, PE or ability to obtain preferred.
  • Typically, 8-12+ years of experience in building mechanical design, including significant work on healthcare or complex institutional facilities in an AEC/MEP consulting environment.
  • Experience serving as project-level mechanical engineer responsible for design production and multi-disciplinary coordination.
  • Working knowledge of healthcare mechanical requirements (ventilation/pressurization, infection control, redundancy/resiliency) and applicable codes/standards.
  • Proficiency in HVAC design tools and Revit/BIM; Navisworks or similar coordination tools a plus.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and organization skills.
