Senior Android Developer Startup information

What does a Senior Android Developer do at a startup?

A Senior Android Developer at a startup is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining Android applications from the ground up. They often work closely with product managers, designers, and other engineers to build user-friendly, scalable apps that align with the company's goals. In a startup environment, they may also oversee code reviews, mentor junior developers, and contribute to architectural decisions. Their role often extends beyond coding, involving problem-solving and adapting quickly to changing priorities.

What are some unique challenges Senior Android Developers face when working at a startup compared to larger organizations?

At a startup, Senior Android Developers often navigate rapidly changing priorities and tight deadlines, which can require quick adaptation and creative problem-solving. Unlike larger organizations with established processes and specialized roles, you may be expected to wear multiple hats, such as contributing to product design, backend integration, and even DevOps tasks. Collaboration tends to be close-knit, with direct communication with founders, designers, and other engineers, allowing for greater ownership but also demanding flexibility and a proactive mindset. These dynamics can accelerate learning and career growth but may also mean longer hours and less structured support.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Android Developer at a startup, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Android Developer at a startup, you need deep expertise in Kotlin and Java, a solid grasp of Android SDK, and a track record of shipping robust mobile apps, often backed by a degree in computer science or equivalent experience. Familiarity with tools like Android Studio, Git, CI/CD pipelines, and exposure to cloud services or RESTful APIs is highly valuable. Strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, and excellent communication help you navigate fast-paced, ambiguous environments and collaborate closely with small teams. These skills ensure you can deliver high-quality products quickly, iterate based on user feedback, and contribute meaningfully to the startup’s growth.

Job Summary
Farmers Insurance is seeking a Senior Android Developer to take our suite of Android applications to the next level. This is a high-impact, senior leadership role where you'll partner closely with business stakeholders, product managers, and fellow engineers to shape what we build and how we build it. You'll help set technical direction, mentor others, demo products to leadership and business teams, and help define the future of mobile at Farmers.
If you're an exceptional engineer who stays at the forefront of modern Android development and is excited about applying AI to real-world products, we want to hear from you.
This is Hybrid opportunity. You will be located in our Woodland HIlls, CA office where you will be onsite 3x's a week.
Internal Position Title: Application Developer V.
What You'll Do
  • Lead the architecture, design, and development of feature-rich, high-performance Android applications.
  • Help own code quality, release readiness, and the overall technical health of our mobile codebase.
  • Partner with business and product teams to translate ideas into validated, actionable roadmaps.
  • Build proofs of concept to evaluate emerging features, technologies, and AI-driven capabilities.
  • Present and demo products to business stakeholders, leadership, and cross-functional teams.
  • Mentor and elevate fellow developers through code reviews, pairing, and knowledge sharing.
  • Drive adoption of modern tools, frameworks, and best practices across the mobile team.

What We're Looking For
Core Engineering Expertise
    • 7-10 years of professional Android development experience, with a track record of shipping production apps at scale.
    • Deep mastery of Kotlin, including coroutines, Flow, and modern language features.
    • Expert-level experience with Jetpack Compose and modern declarative UI development.
    • Strong command of Android Jetpack libraries and architecture components (ViewModel, Navigation, Room, WorkManager, DataStore).
    • Solid grasp of modern app architecture patterns - MVVM, MVI, Clean Architecture, and modularization.
    • Experience with dependency injection (Hilt / Dagger), reactive programming, and concurrency.
    • Proficiency with Kotlin Multiplatform (KMP) is a strong plus.
    • Strong testing discipline - unit, UI, and integration testing (JUnit, Espresso, Compose testing APIs).
    • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, app performance optimization, and Play Store release management.
    • Familiarity with REST/GraphQL APIs, secure data handling, and mobile security best practices - especially important in a regulated industry like insurance.

Beyond Android
    • Backend & APIs - Understanding of how the server side works, including REST design, authentication flows (OAuth, JWT), API versioning, and debugging issues that span client and server. You don't have to build the backend, but you should speak the language and push back on bad API contracts.
    • Cloud & DevOps Fundamentals - Familiarity with cloud platforms (Heroku, GCP), CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, Jenkins), and build automation. Knowing how releases actually ship - staged rollouts, feature flags, and crash monitoring (Firebase Crashlytics, Sentry).
    • Security & Compliance - Especially critical in insurance. Secure storage, certificate pinning, encryption, PII handling, and awareness of regulations like CCPA/GDPR and industry-specific data rules, including the OWASP Mobile Top 10.
    • Cross-Platform Awareness - Even though the app is native, understanding of Kotlin Multiplatform, Flutter, or React Native to inform architecture decisions and collaborate with teams that use them.
    • System Design & Architecture - Modularization, scalability, offline-first patterns, caching strategies, and designing for maintainability across a large codebase and team.
    • Product & Business Sense - Reading analytics (Firebase, Segment, Mixpanel), understanding A/B testing, conversion funnels, and tying engineering work to business outcomes.

What We're Looking For (Continued)
AI & Emerging Technology
    • Practical understanding of AI and LLMs, and how to integrate them into mobile products.
    • Experience with on-device ML (Gemini Nano, ML Kit, TensorFlow Lite/LiteRT) and/or cloud-based AI services is highly desirable.
    • Curiosity and ability to research and adopt emerging Android technologies quickly.

Soft Skills & Leadership
    • Excellent communication skills - able to explain technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
    • Confident presenting and demoing products to business stakeholders and leadership.
    • Strong collaboration skills and a proven ability to work effectively across teams.
    • A mentor mindset - invested in growing the skills of those around you, fostering a strong code review culture, and translating technical tradeoffs for non-technical audiences.
    • Skilled at estimating, scoping, and prioritizing work.
    • Strong problem-solving ability; flexible, self-directed, and thrives under pressure.
    • Product-minded - understands business goals and the "why" behind the work.

Education Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
