Senior Additive Manufacturing Engineer information

What does a senior additive manufacturing engineer do?

A Senior Additive Manufacturing Engineer leads the design, development, and optimization of 3D printing processes and technologies within a company. They oversee the entire lifecycle of additive manufacturing projects, from concept to production, ensuring quality and efficiency. Their responsibilities include selecting appropriate materials, troubleshooting equipment, implementing best practices, and collaborating with cross-functional teams on innovative manufacturing solutions. Additionally, they mentor junior engineers and help drive advancements in additive manufacturing capabilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior additive manufacturing engineer?

To thrive as a Senior Additive Manufacturing Engineer, you need expertise in materials science, mechanical engineering, and 3D printing processes, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree and several years of industry experience. Familiarity with CAD software, additive manufacturing machines, simulation tools, and certifications such as ASME or SME Additive Manufacturing credentials are commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, project management, and effective communication skills help drive innovation and collaborate across multidisciplinary teams. These skills ensure the successful design, optimization, and implementation of advanced additive manufacturing solutions in a competitive and evolving field.

How does a senior additive manufacturing engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams in a production environment?

A Senior Additive Manufacturing Engineer frequently works closely with design, materials, and quality assurance teams to ensure that 3D-printed components meet performance and regulatory standards. They are often involved in design reviews, providing input on manufacturability, and coordinating with production engineers to optimize printing processes. Regular communication and problem-solving with these teams help to identify potential issues early and drive continuous improvement. Their role also often involves training junior engineers and supporting technology integration across departments.

What is the difference between Senior Additive Manufacturing Engineer vs Additive Manufacturing Technician?

AspectSenior Additive Manufacturing EngineerAdditive Manufacturing Technician
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Engineering, certifications in additive manufacturingTechnical diploma or associate degree, on-the-job training
Work EnvironmentDesign, development, and process optimization in R&D or manufacturing settingsOperating and maintaining 3D printers on production floors
ResponsibilitiesDesigning parts, improving processes, overseeing projectsSetting up printers, troubleshooting, post-processing

The Senior Additive Manufacturing Engineer focuses on designing, optimizing, and managing additive manufacturing processes, often in a leadership or project role. In contrast, the Additive Manufacturing Technician handles the hands-on operation and maintenance of 3D printers. Both roles are essential but differ in scope, responsibilities, and required experience.

Job description

Job Title
Senior Manufacturing Engineer
Who are we?
As an aircraft manufacturer, industrialist, industrial service provider and logistician, Daher currently has approximately 14,500 employees and achieved a revenue of 1.9 billion euros in 2025. With its family ownership, Daher has been focused on innovation since its creation in 1863. With locations in 15 countries across Europe, North America and Asia, Daher designs and develops value-added solutions for its aeronautical and industrial customers and partners
Kodiak Aircraft is seeking a highly capable Senior Manufacturing Engineer to help turn aircraft design intent into repeatable, efficient, and controlled manufacturing execution.
This role sits at the intersection of Design Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Production, Quality, Tooling, Supply Chain, ERP, and cost. You will improve how the aircraft is built by strengthening methods, sequencing, manufacturing documentation, tooling needs, and design-for-manufacturing feedback.
This is more than a support role. It is an ownership role for someone who can work side-by-side with mechanics, solve root-cause production issues, and improve a low-rate, high-complexity aircraft production system.
Why this role matters: better manufacturing methods, clearer build sequences, practical tooling, and stronger DFM decisions reduce rework, labor hours, and build inconsistency while protecting production execution.
What Makes This Role Senior:
Senior means ownership, judgment, and credibility. We are looking for someone who can independently diagnose production constraints, connect design, manufacturing, quality, ERP, and cost, and drive practical improvements through completion rather than applying short-term patches.
Primary Role and Responsibilities:
  • Work directly with mechanics and production teams to solve real build problems and make processes clear, ergonomic, and executable.

  • Redesign build sequences, work content, and line flow across fabrication, subassembly, and final assembly where needed.

  • Perform DFM analysis using CAD models and engineering drawings, and translate design intent into efficient manufacturing methods.

  • Author manufacturing prints or models that ease production while remaining traceable to type design and within fit, form, and function.

  • Build and present the case for type design changes when manufacturing documentation alone is not sufficient.

  • Reduce labor hours, rework, bottlenecks, and recurring production friction through better methods, sequencing, tooling, and ERP alignment.

What you need to have:
  • Bachelor's degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, Industrial, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field.

  • 10+ years of manufacturing engineering experience, preferably in aerospace or complex assembly.

  • Strong hands-on understanding of machining, sheet metal, welding, composites, and mechanical or electrical assembly.

  • Strong CAD proficiency and fluency reading engineering drawings, including GD&T per ASME Y14.5.

  • Demonstrated experience with DFM analysis and manufacturing-specific documentation distinct from type design documentation.

  • Solid ERP experience such as Epicor or SAP, including eBOM/mBOM reconciliation and routings.

  • Proven ability to fix problems at the root, make systems simpler and more robust, and drive projects through completion.

Preferred:
  • Experience in general aviation or low-rate high-mix aerospace production, introducing manufacturing print or DFM practices to an existing product, AS9100 or FAA/FAR Part 23 manufacturing environments, and supplier manufacturability or delivery issue resolution.

Why Kodiak Aircraft in Sandpoint?
At Kodiak Aircraft, Manufacturing Engineering has a direct impact on how aircraft are built every day. This role offers visibility across design, production, tooling, planning, supplier execution, and cost.
Sandpoint offers meaningful aerospace work in a unique location, with Lake Pend Oreille and Schweitzer Mountain nearby. If you want to improve the build system behind a rugged, mission-ready aircraft, we would like to hear from you.
Information related to the position:
  • The compensation range is $120,000 to $140,000 in base salary plus an annual target bonus.
  • The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Daher considers a number of factors when determining salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, skills, and current market conditions.
  • At Daher, your total rewards package is more than just your base salary as we offer a full benefit package including Medical, Dental, Vision, 401(k), Life insurance, Short- and Long-Term Disability, Paid Time Off, Paid Holidays and more.

Your next opportunity starts here - here are the next steps:
  • Review of your application
  • An initial conversation with a recruiter
  • One or more interviews depending on the position, with the relevant team members and manager(s)
  • After the interviews, constructive feedback regardless of the outcome
