Senescence information
What is senescence in the context of biology?
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a gerontologist, and why are they important?
What are some common challenges faced by researchers working in the field of senescence biology?
What is the difference between Senescence vs Cell Biologist?
| Aspect | Senescence | Cell Biologist |
|---|---|---|
| Required credentials | Typically requires a PhD in biology, biochemistry, or related fields | Requires a PhD or master's in biology, cell biology, or related disciplines |
| Work environment | Research labs, biotech companies, academic institutions | Research labs, universities, biotech firms |
| Industry usage | Used in aging research, cancer studies, regenerative medicine | Involved in studying cell functions, mechanisms, and processes |
Senescence refers to the biological process where cells stop dividing and enter a state of growth arrest, often related to aging or stress responses. Cell Biologists study the structure, function, and behavior of cells, including processes like senescence. While senescence is a specific cellular process, cell biologists explore a broad range of cellular functions, making their roles complementary but distinct.

Job description
Sets up and performs routine and established lab procedures in support of lab goals, grant commitments, i.e. assays, cell/tissue culture, animal studies, etc. Monitors results, reports unusual outcomes and suggests modifications. Collects, enters and summarizes data. Assists in the maintenance of lab equipment and supplies. Performs basic statistical data analysis; prepares tables/charts/graphs and assists in organizing data. Presents at research laboratory meetings and contributes to writing of manuscripts. Works under supervision and may perform some assignments independently as discussed and approved by Principal Investigator.
The Gingery laboratory investigates local and systemic impacts of aging, cellular senescence, immune dysregulation, and metabolic dysfunction in musculoskeletal diseases and conditions. These include carpal tunnel syndrome, Dupuytren contracture, rheumatoid arthritis, connective tissue fibrosis, tendinopathy, rotator cuff tears, tendon injury and repair, skeletal biology, and wound healing. The goal is to develop evidence-based preventives and therapeutics. Dr. Gingery and her Musculoskeletal Biology and Immunology Laboratory uses multidisciplinary, state-of-the-art approaches, including bioinformatics and spatial, single-cell, and metabolomic multi-omics.
The Research Technologist would support ongoing projects. Duties will include routine, cell, molecular, model system and translational laboratory work under supervision of the PI. Candidate should be highly goal and detail oriented and have strong teamwork skills. Training will be provided on many in-lab techniques but previous experience working with model systems and molecular techniques is highly preferred.
