General Description
*THE SEMINOLE COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE IS OFFERING A $5,000 HIRING INCENTIVE FOR CERTIFIED CORRECTIONS OFFICERS WITH AT LEAST 3 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE!*
The Seminole County Sheriff's Office is now accepting applications for the position of EXPERIENCED DETENTION DEPUTY FOR CORRECTIONS. To be eligible for the hiring incentive, must have at least three (3) years of experience as a certified corrections officer and have a currently active Criminal Justice Standards and Training (CJSTC) Corrections Certification. The hiring incentive will be paid upon completion of field training.
All applicants must possess a State of Florida Certificate of Completion and/or Certification of Compliance, but are not required to have any prior work experience in the field of Corrections.
The position of Detention Deputy performs generalized corrections work in the care, custody, control, and re-entry of sentenced and non-sentenced inmates at the John E. Polk Correctional Facility.
The starting annual base salary is $62,004 ($27.73 per hour), plus the potential for additional holiday pay up to $3,660 for those employees who work twelve (12) hour shifts. The Sheriff's Office offers a competitive benefits package including retirement benefits under the Florida Retirement System, paid medical/dental/life insurance, generous leave accrual, wellness benefits, and education incentives and assistance.

Typical Duties

A Detention Deputy is a uniformed officer who is responsible for the care, custody, control and re-entry of sentenced and non-sentenced inmates. As a detention deputy, your role includes helping provide offenders with the tools necessary to become law-abiding citizens upon release. Detention Deputies maintain a consistent routine and demeanor while supervising offenders.
Responsibilities include:
  • Ensuring the safety and security of inmates
  • Supervising inmates to prevent altercations
  • Maintaining accurate count and current location of all inmates
  • Communicate effectively and coherently with other officers and inmates
  • Demonstrate communications skills in court and other formal settings
  • Ensure the cleanliness of the area of assigned responsibility
  • Perform crisis intervention functions to include counseling, suicide prevention, recognizing abnormal behavior, and taking appropriate action
  • Maintains detailed documentation

DUAL CERTIFIED
Detention Deputies that are sworn in as Dual Certified will be required to facilitate any necessary arrests or detainment of individuals within the scope of their job or specialized position. May be required to investigate crimes committed within a Seminole County Sheriff's Office Facility. This includes the John E. Polk correctional facility, Courthouses, Juvenile Facilities and Seminole County Probation facilities. If being utilized on a specialized enforcement team than the Dual Certified Detention Deputy may make lawful arrests and or detentions during the operational need only.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • A citizen of the United States
  • 18 years of age
  • Must not have been convicted of any felony or of a misdemeanor involving perjury or false statement, nor have received a dishonorable discharge from any of the Armed Forces of the United States
  • Must possess and maintain valid Florida Driver's License
  • All applicants must possess a State of Florida Certificate of Completion and/or Certification of Compliance, but are NOT required to have any prior work experience in the field of Corrections
  • All applicants will be required to take a Physical Abilities Test (P.A.T.), Civil Service written examination, and Firearms qualification. Applicants must score at least 70% on the Civil Service examination in each of the three (3) sections (reading comprehension, problem solving, & report writing) and must pass the firearms qualification test with a score of 33 out of 38 or better.

WORKING CONDITIONS
The work environment is mostly within the confined setting of the John E. Polk Correctional Facility, Seminole County Juvenile Facility or the Seminole County Court System. This position generally works a shift (days or nights) with rotating days off.

External applicants for employment will submit to a thorough background investigation, which includes, but not limited to, past employment/education verification, driver license review, credit history, prior drug use history, arrest/conviction record, and computerized voice stress analysis (CVSA) testing. A certified examiner administers the CVSA with questions addressing illegal drug use and general questions of honesty and criminal history. The background investigation process may take 3-6 months depending upon the complexity of the applicant's background and position for which you've applied. Applicants selected for employment will be provided a conditional offer and required to submit to a medical examination with drug screening.

Paid Time Off and Holidays
Full-time employees accrue 200 hours of PTO per year, which increases over time based on length of service with the Seminole County Sheriff's Office (SCSO), and is utilized for both sick and vacation leave. Full-time employees receive eleven (11) paid holidays plus a paid personal day off annually.
Medical, Dental, Vision and Supplementary Insurance Plans
SCSO pays 100% for full-time employee-only Medical and Dental coverage through UnitedHealthcare (UHC). Full-time employees can also cover themselves and eligible dependents under one of three options of comprehensive Medical and Dental insurance for an additional charge. One of the Medical options is a Health Savings Account (HSA) Compatible Plan, which offers a tax-advantaged way to save and pay for qualified medical expenses. SCSO also offers Vision and supplementary UHC Accident, Critical Illness, and Hospitalization coverages at an additional cost to the employee.

Life and Accidental Death & Dismemberment Insurance (AD&D)
SCSO provides for full-time employees' Basic Life insurance at no cost to employees, which includes Accidental Death and Dismemberment insurance, with coverage equal to one time the employee's annual salary. SCSO also offers Voluntary Life insurance for employees, spouses, and/or children at a minimal cost to the employee. Sworn and certified personnel are provided with additional Line-of-duty Death benefits at no cost.
Temporary Disability (TDB) and Long-term Disability Insurance
SCSO pays for Long-term Disability coverage for all full-time employees. In lieu of Short-term Disability insurance, employees are provided a Temporary Disability Benefit (TDB) leave designed to assist employees who are unable to work due to certain defined circumstances such as Maternity/Paternity Leave, Catastrophic Medical Conditions, or a serious Minor Child Illness. The TDB benefit provides employees 65% of their normal pay for a limited time in order to protect their standard of living in a time of need. Employees may choose to utilize their accrued PTO to make up the other 35% of their normal pay while on approved TDB Leave.
Flexible Spending Account (FSA)
SCSO offers a Medical Flexible Spending Account (FSA) that allows employees to set aside pre-tax dollars to pay for various, qualified out-of-pocket medical expenses. FSA accounts can pay for medical expenses the employee or the employee's dependents incur even if they are not enrolled in SCSO's medical insurance plan.
Educational Assistance
SCSO's Educational Assistance Program is designed to financially assist full-time employees in good standing who have completed their initial new hire probationary period and are pursuing a college-level degree (i.e. Associates, Bachelors, Graduate Certificate, Masters, Professional Graduate and Doctoral). The program provides up to a $4,000 annual allowance on a reimbursement basis for college-level courses when grade requirements are met.
