Semiconductor R D focuses on developing new materials and device designs in research environments, while Semiconductor Process Engineers work on implementing and improving manufacturing processes in production settings. Both roles are essential in the semiconductor industry but differ in their focus, environment, and objectives.

What is Semiconductor R&D?

Semiconductor R&D (Research and Development) refers to the process of investigating, designing, and innovating new semiconductor materials, devices, and manufacturing processes. Professionals in this field work to advance technology for microchips, transistors, and integrated circuits that power electronic devices. R&D in semiconductors is crucial for improving performance, reducing size, increasing energy efficiency, and supporting emerging technologies such as AI, 5G, and IoT. This work typically involves both theoretical research and practical experimentation in labs or cleanroom environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Semiconductor R&D Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Semiconductor R&D Engineer, you need a strong background in electrical engineering, physics, or materials science, typically supported by an advanced degree and experience in semiconductor device fabrication and characterization. Familiarity with CAD tools, simulation software (such as TCAD), and cleanroom equipment is essential, and certifications in microelectronics or nanotechnology can be advantageous. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills for innovating and overcoming technical challenges. These competencies are vital to successfully develop new semiconductor technologies and stay competitive in a rapidly evolving industry.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in Semiconductor R&D teams?

Professionals in Semiconductor R&D often encounter challenges such as keeping pace with rapid technological advancements and stringent project timelines. The role requires balancing innovative experimentation with meeting the reliability and scalability standards expected in production. Additionally, cross-functional collaboration is crucial since R&D teams frequently work alongside design, manufacturing, and testing departments to ensure new developments are feasible and align with business objectives. Navigating these complexities is a key part of daily work, but it also offers excellent opportunities for learning and career development.

Job description

Description:

Company Overview

NovoLINC is a deep-tech spin-off from Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) dedicated to creating world-class thermal interface materials (TIM). Our high-performance solutions serve the semiconductor, AI data center, and aerospace industries. We are a "people-first" company where every team member is given the opportunity to grow their technical skills while driving sustainable global advancement.

Job Summary

As a Plating Line Operator, you will be responsible for the day-to-day execution of our electroplating processes. You will work closely with the Senior Technician under the guidance of the Senior Plating Engineer to run production batches, maintain chemical baths, and ensure high-quality output of products. This is a hands-on role in a fast-paced "scale-up" environment, transitioning from R&D-scale to larger production development and pilot lines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Production Execution: Independently run plating operations and other SOP based chemical processes.
  • Material Preparation: Prepare delicate thin film materials under clean manufacturing conditions.
  • Bath Maintenance: Perform titrations, pH testing and periodic chemical addition to plating baths inline with schedule and SOP.
  • Contamination Control: Maintain strict adherence to contamination control protocols to ensure the integrity of delicate thin-film substrates
  • Equipment Upkeep: Assist in preventative maintenance to minimize downtime.
  • Quality & Documentation: Record production data accurately for product traceability using both handwritten and digital formats.
  • Safety & Compliance: Maintain a clean, 6S-compliant workspace and assist with weekly OSHA safety checks under the direction of the Senior Technician.

Qualifications

  • Experience: Previous experience in manufacturing is required.
  • Chemical Handling: Hands-on experience with safe chemical handling, storage, and addition calculations is a must. Familiarity with Reading/Interpreting Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
  • Electroplating (Preferred): Prior experience with electroplating, racking, or continuous plating lines is a strong plus.
  • Education: High school diploma with some exposure to high school-level chemistry.
  • Skills: Strong attention to detail, ability to follow complex SOPs, and basic proficiency with digital tracking tools/apps.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to work onsite in a laboratory/process environment and handle materials according to safety protocols.

Why Join NovoLINC?

  • Opportunity to work at the forefront of thermal management innovation.
  • Competitive salary and benefits, including healthcare, 401K and flexible PTO.
  • A collaborative, inclusive environment that celebrates diversity and professional growth.
