How much do semiconductor optics led jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 19, 2026, the average hourly pay for semiconductor optics led in the United States is $21.44, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $16.35 and $23.32 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges faced by a Semiconductor Optics Lead when managing cross-functional teams?

A Semiconductor Optics Lead often collaborates with engineers, designers, and manufacturing specialists, making effective communication crucial. One common challenge is aligning the optics team's goals with those of other departments, such as process engineering or quality assurance, which may have different priorities or technical perspectives. Additionally, the lead must frequently balance project timelines with the need for precision and innovation in optical design. Navigating these complexities requires strong project management skills and the ability to foster a collaborative, problem-solving culture within multidisciplinary teams.

What is the difference between Semiconductor Optics Led vs Semiconductor Optics Technician?

AspectSemiconductor Optics LedSemiconductor Optics Technician
Required CredentialsDegree in optics, physics, or electrical engineeringTechnical diploma or associate degree in electronics or optics
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, manufacturing facilities, R&D departmentsProduction lines, testing labs, maintenance areas
Industry UsageDesign and development of optical components and LEDsAssembly, testing, and troubleshooting optical devices and LEDs

Semiconductor Optics Led professionals focus on designing and developing LED and optical components, often requiring advanced degrees. In contrast, Semiconductor Optics Technicians handle the assembly, testing, and maintenance of optical devices, typically with technical diplomas. Both roles are vital in the semiconductor optics industry but differ in responsibilities, credentials, and work environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Semiconductor Optics Lead, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Semiconductor Optics Lead, you need a strong background in optical engineering, semiconductor physics, and experience with advanced photonics, typically supported by a relevant degree (such as Physics, Electrical Engineering, or Optics) and industry experience. Proficiency in optical design software (e.g., Zemax, LightTools), simulation tools, and familiarity with semiconductor fabrication processes are essential. Exceptional problem-solving, leadership, and communication skills help coordinate cross-functional teams and drive innovation. These competencies ensure the successful development and integration of optical solutions critical to semiconductor device performance and competitiveness.

What are Semiconductor Optics Leads?

A Semiconductor Optics Lead is a professional who oversees the development and optimization of optical systems used within semiconductor manufacturing and research. They are responsible for leading teams that design, test, and implement optical components such as lasers, lenses, and photolithography systems critical to the production of microchips and other semiconductor devices. These leads ensure that optical technologies meet industry standards for precision, efficiency, and innovation, often collaborating with engineers, scientists, and manufacturers. Their expertise bridges the gap between semiconductor physics and applied optics, driving advancements in technology.

Responsibilities

Design Engineering Software (DES) is a global, multibusinessunit software organization within Keysight, delivering advanced engineering software platforms that enable customers to design, simulate, and validate the world’s most complex electronic, mechanical and optical systems. One of these business units, Optical Design Engineering (ODE), focuses on industryleading optical and photonics design and simulation software.

Keysight is seeking a proven softwareoriented General Manager to lead the ODE Business Unit, with full P&L ownership and endtoend responsibility for strategy, growth, and execution. This role represents a significant general management opportunity for a senior leader with a strong software engineering background to scale a global engineering software business, modernize development practices, accelerate recurring revenue, and drive profitable growth within a broader, highly differentiated multiphysics software portfolio.

ODE delivers industryleading optical and photonics software that extends DES’s multiphysics platform into optics and photonics. The business enables softwarefirst, systemlevel virtual prototyping across electronics, mechanics, and optics—empowering customers to innovate new products faster, reduce physical prototypes, and manage increasing system complexity through scalable simulation workflows.

As part of Keysight’s ongoing DES transformation, this role is central to advancing modern software engineering excellence, including agile development, continuous delivery, and the effective use of AIenabled productivity tools across the value chain. The General Manager holds full accountability for business performance, software technology direction, and people leadership, while contributing to DESwide innovation, platform integration, and longterm value creation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead a global software engineering–led organization with core development and leadership hubs in the United States, Germany, and Japan, supported by regional commercial coverage across the globe.

  • Report directly to the Senior Vice President of DES and operate as a member of the DES senior leadership team, contributing to enterpriselevel software strategy, portfolio evolution, and transformation execution.

  • Own the endtoend ODE business with full P&L responsibility, including:

  • Software product and platform strategy aligned with DES architectural priorities

  • Software engineering execution, agile roadmap delivery, and release predictability

  • Gotomarket alignment, pipeline expansion, and recurring revenue growth

  • Operational efficiency, cost discipline, and scalable software execution

  • Drive the evolution of ODE’s development model by strengthening agile and DevOps practices, improving crossfunctional collaboration between engineering, product management, and gotomarket teams, and increasing speed, quality, and customer impact.

  • Champion the adoption of AIenabled productivity tools across engineering, product management, and operations to improve developer efficiency, code quality, testing, documentation, analytics, and decisionmaking.

  • Lead the continued transformation toward recurring software revenue through subscription, hybrid, and enterprise deployment models, improving customer onboarding, adoption, retention, and lifetime value.

  • Act as a strategic software business leader, anticipating and shaping industry evolution across:

  • Optical and photonics simulation software platforms

  • Modern software licensing and deployment models (onpremise, subscription, hybrid enterprise)

  • Highperformance computing, GPU acceleration, cloudnative architectures, and scalable SaaS models

  • AIenabled design, simulation, and automation workflows

  • Identify and develop new growth opportunities by combining software technologies across DES business units, leveraging Keysight’s scale to address highvalue customer workflows and emerging market needs.

  • Drive portfolio focus and differentiation by prioritizing highimpact software use cases, target markets, and competitive positioning within a rapidly evolving simulation and engineering software ecosystem.

  • Ensure strong alignment with DES and Keysight strategies, integrating ODE priorities with broader software, hardware, and solutions portfolios to maximize customer value and operational leverage.

  • Build and sustain a highperforming, inclusive leadership culture, developing software engineering talent, succession, and engagement across geographies while leading effectively through change.

Qualifications
  • Senior engineering leader with a strong software engineering background and experience leading large, complex development organizations at scale.

  • Strong business acumen, with the ability to translate customer needs, market dynamics, and strategy into effective product, engineering, and investment decisions.
