Semi Volatile information

What are semi volatile jobs?

Semi volatile jobs typically refer to positions involved in the analysis, testing, or handling of semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) in various settings such as environmental science, laboratories, or industrial hygiene. These roles may include laboratory analysts, technicians, or environmental scientists who specialize in detecting and quantifying SVOCs in air, water, soil, or consumer products. The work usually involves the use of methods like gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and adherence to safety and regulatory standards. Understanding SVOCs is important because they can affect indoor and outdoor air quality and human health. Professionals in these jobs play a critical role in monitoring pollution, ensuring compliance, and protecting public health.

What is the difference between Semi Volatile vs Volatile Chemical Technician?

AspectSemi Volatile Chemical TechnicianVolatile Chemical Technician
Required CertificationsOSHA safety training, chemical handling certificationsOSHA safety training, chemical handling certifications
Work EnvironmentLaboratories, manufacturing plants, controlled environmentsLaboratories, manufacturing facilities, often with exposure to fumes
Industry UsagePharmaceutical, chemical manufacturing, researchChemical manufacturing, petrochemical, research

Both Semi Volatile and Volatile Chemical Technicians work in similar environments and require comparable certifications. The key difference lies in the type of chemicals they handle: semi volatile chemicals have higher boiling points and are less prone to evaporation, whereas volatile chemicals evaporate easily at room temperature. Understanding these distinctions helps in choosing the right career path or job focus within the chemical industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Semi-Volatile Organic Compound (SVOC) Analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as an SVOC Analyst, you need a solid background in chemistry or environmental science, often with a bachelor's degree and experience in analytical laboratory techniques. Familiarity with technical tools such as gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and adherence to EPA methods and laboratory safety standards are essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and strong organizational skills are valued soft skills in this role. These skills ensure accurate detection and analysis of SVOCs, supporting environmental compliance and public health.

What are some common challenges faced when analyzing semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) in the laboratory, and how can new team members overcome them?

Analyzing SVOCs in the laboratory often involves handling complex sample matrices and ensuring strict adherence to quality control procedures. Common challenges include potential contamination, matrix interferences, and maintaining the sensitivity and accuracy of analytical instruments like GC-MS. New team members can overcome these challenges by thoroughly following standard operating procedures, participating in ongoing training, and collaborating closely with experienced analysts to troubleshoot issues as they arise. Remaining detail-oriented and proactive in maintaining equipment and documenting results is key to achieving reliable outcomes.

What does semi-volatile mean?

In the context of a semi-volatile job, the term refers to roles that involve working with materials or substances that have moderate volatility, meaning they can vaporize at certain temperatures but are not highly volatile. Such jobs often require knowledge of handling chemicals safely, using specialized equipment, and adhering to safety protocols. The volatility level influences safety measures, storage, and handling procedures in the workplace.

Job description

Junior Analytical Chemist / Application Scientist: Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS)

Entech Instruments Inc. - Simi Valley, CA

Entech Instruments Inc., a California-based analytical instrumentation company, is seeking an individual experienced with developing GC-MS applications with a particular history of using sample preparation and introduction techniques such as SPME, SBSE, SPE, or dynamic headspace for a variety of matrices, including water, soil, pharmaceuticals, packaging, and food & beverage. Entech's recently introduced technology, VASE (Vacuum Assisted Sorbent Extraction), aims to revolutionize the GC-MS research and testing industry by enabling solvent-free exhaustive extractions of volatile and semi-volatile compounds in a rapidly growing number of sample types and matrices while improving sensitivity and reproducibility.

The successful candidate will participate in a team focused on new product and application development for multiple industry verticals and will have the opportunity to be involved with R&D, application note development, customer application support, journal publications, and presenting findings in both oral and poster presentations at conferences and trade shows worldwide.

Responsibilities:

Developing and validating analytical methods for quantification of small-molecule organic compounds for applications such as water analysis, flavors & aromas, food safety, cannabis, clinical biomarkers, pharmaceuticals, odorants and others.

Thoroughly documenting analytical procedures and building best practices for sample preparation and instrument parameters.

Compiling data, performing analysis, and developing conclusions supported by data.

Authoring application notes and assisting marketing teams with publishing data to web site.

       Assisting with research and development.

Analyzing customer samples and supporting customer applications.

       Troubleshooting analytical instrumentation as needed.

Some travel to shows and conferences to present research and posters.

Requirements:

Must be enthusiastic about new product development and willing to participate in rigorous experimentation with short production timelines.

3+ years working with extraction technologies such as SPME, SBSE, SPE, Purge & Trap, SOXLET, Quechers, Dynamic Headspace and other sample preparation techniques.

Experience with Agilent, Thermo, or Shimadzu GC-MS systems.

Excellent communication skills in English, both oral and written for technical documentation, reporting of experimental results, and oral presentations.

Must be able to present technical concepts and simulated or experimental results.
