Job description

MMWEC is seeking a dynamic Protection & Controls Engineering Technician. Incumbent will provide electrical protection and control system support to all generation projects within MMWEC’s purview. Works closely with engineering and plant management to ensure safe, compliant operation and improvement of the protection and control systems within each project. Incumbent is responsible for adhering to industry standards, applicable laws, and Chapter 775 requirements as applicable.
Responsibilities:
  • Provide technical support to the Stony Brook Energy Center, Northeast Reliability Center, and Municipal Light Plant Wind, Solar, and other energy storage projects.
  • Work with Engineering and Management to define areas for process improvements and upgrades to modernize controls infrastructure and improve reliable plant operations.
  • Serve as technical lead and project manager for major capital improvement, control, and network upgrade projects. 
  • Serve as onsite IT and network architecture support to maintain and improve operation of generation and administrative networks.
  • Work with CIP senior manager to ensure compliance with NERC standards and reliable and secure operation of generation facility networks.

Skills:
  • Deep technical understanding of electrical power system controls including construction and operation.
  • Expertise in electrical wiring standards and codes.
  • Strong decision-making skills.
  • Project and vendor management skills to drive major capital projects to completion.
  • Experience in AutoCAD and 2D drafting preferred.
  • Experience in electromechanical, solid state relay, and protection systems.
  • Proficiency with SEL relay and metering systems as well as experience with SEL AcSELerator and RTAC AcSELerator preferred.
  • Experience with Allen Bradley products and control software including Studio5000, RSLogix 500, RSLink, and Connected Components Workbench preferred.

Experience:
  • 7 to 10 years of job-related experience.
  • Must have experience in power generation controls and relay/protection systems installation, operations & maintenance.
  • Journeymen electrician preferred.
  • Some travel required.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical activities, including opening/closing large valves and safely climbing on, in, and around heavy industrial equipment.
  • Comfortable working in a power plant environment, which often includes disagreeable working conditions such as fluctuating temperatures, noise, and industrial settings.
