Seed Stage Startup information

What is a seed stage startup?

A seed stage startup is an early-phase company that is just beginning operations and is typically focused on developing its initial product or service. At this stage, the business is often seeking its first round of external funding, known as seed capital, to help validate its idea, build a prototype, and conduct market research. Seed stage startups usually have a small founding team and may not yet have significant revenue or a fully developed business model. The goal at this stage is to prove the concept and prepare for further investment and growth.

What are some common challenges of working at a seed stage startup, and how can I prepare for them?

Working at a seed stage startup often means wearing multiple hats and adapting quickly to shifting priorities. Resources can be limited, which requires creativity and a willingness to learn new skills on the fly. Team members typically collaborate closely, and communication is key to navigating the fast-paced, sometimes ambiguous environment. Being proactive, flexible, and comfortable with uncertainty will help you thrive and make a strong impact as the startup grows.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a seed stage startup founder or early team member, and why are they important?

To thrive at a seed stage startup, you need a strong entrepreneurial mindset, versatility across business functions, and often relevant industry experience or technical expertise. Familiarity with tools like lean startup methodologies, project management platforms (e.g., Trello, Asana), and basic financial modeling is typically required. Exceptional resilience, adaptability, and effective communication are crucial soft skills in this dynamic environment. These abilities are vital for navigating uncertainty, driving growth, and rapidly iterating on ideas in the early, resource-constrained stages of a company.

Job description

Rockstar is recruiting for an edtech/govtech startup that is building the first common application system for PK-12, focused on increasing access to high quality education. This Nobel Prize-winning, venture-backed, seed-stage company works with cities, school districts, and nonprofits to set up one-stop-shop enrollment hubs for families to find, navigate, and register for educational and social programs. The team includes 25 humans, founded by a Nobel Laureate, a Clark Medalist, and a Social Entrepreneur.

Work with the Go to Market team to grow the business in the charter sector. The role will be responsible for generating demand and building pipeline, including through direct outreach, field events, and marketing support, as well owning deals and working them through close.

Although similar to a sales / Account Executive role, since this is a startup, the company needs someone who will be extraordinarily proactive and do whatever it takes to grow the business.

For this role, the company isn't looking for traditional sales people - they want practitioners who have lived the experiences of their clients and empathize with their work and challenges. The best candidates would be former CMO leaders or administrators in student services, operations, accountability, or enrollment. Sales, partnerships, development/fundraising, or other business experience is helpful, but the company is open to eager candidates with a competitive drive who want to learn the ropes. Candidates must live within 1 hour of hubs in San Francisco or Boston.

(If you have experience at the district or municipal level, separate roles are available for those sectors. And there are also roles available for experienced sales professionals as well - visit avela.org/careers to find those openings.)

The candidate will be a full stack sales executive, responsible for all stages of the sales process:

  • Send outbound emails
  • Cold calls

  • Working charter conferences
  • Mining referral networks
Working the deal
  • Scheduling meetings
  • Attending all meetings
  • Demo the product (and leveraging specialists for high priority demos)
  • Leveraging professional and technical services specialists
  • Building relationships with stakeholders and influencers
  • Understanding decision-making process and politics
  • Following up, checking in
  • Submitting proposals and quotes
Closing the deal
  • Pricing and negotiation
  • Contracting
  • Navigating procurement
  • Entering the information correctly into Hubspot
  • Confirming contract information is correctly synced with TABS
  • Monitoring TABS to ensure invoices are paid
Handing off the customer
  • Coordinating internally to identify the CSM
  • Introducing the client to the CSM and implementation team
  • Joining the first kick-off call to ensure smooth handoff to implementation team
Compensation
  • OTE: $150,000 - $200,000+
  • Base Salary: $70,000 - $90,000
  • Bonus: $70,000 - $120,000+
  • Equity: ~5,000 Shares
Qualifications
  • Based in San Francisco or Boston preferred; open to candidates located near major airports, with a preference for the West Coast (LAX, SAN, SEA, DEN, LAS).
  • 4+ years of full time professional experience
  • 2+ years in charter administration role, preferably at a large CMO/network in operational roles including CEO/Executive Director, Enrollment, Student Services, Accountability, or Operations
  • Passion for education, equity, or social impact
