How much do sediment jobs pay per year?
What is the difference between Sediment vs Geologist?
| Aspect | Sediment | Geologist |
|---|---|---|
| Required credentials | High school diploma or associate degree, training in sediment analysis | Bachelor's or higher in geology or earth sciences, certifications may vary |
| Work environment | Laboratory, field sampling sites, construction sites | Fieldwork, laboratories, research institutions |
| Industry usage | Environmental, construction, mining, research | Earth sciences, environmental consulting, academia |
While Sediment specialists focus on analyzing and managing sediment samples, Geologists have a broader role in studying Earth's processes, including rocks, minerals, and landforms. Both roles often collaborate in environmental and construction projects, but Sediment roles are more specialized in sediment analysis and management.

This role is for an Erosion & Sediment Control Inspector, responsible for ensuring construction sites comply with environmental regulations designed to prevent soil erosion and sediment runoff.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct field inspections at construction sites to verify compliance with erosion and sediment control permits.
- Inspect erosion control measures such as:
- Silt fences

- Perimeter controls
- Grading activities
- Review erosion and sediment control plans to ensure they meet Virginia regulations.
- Document inspection findings and prepare detailed reports.
- Update project and construction documentation.
- Perform post-construction inspections.
- Stay current on Virginia environmental laws and regulations.
- Travel to job sites, often independently, using a company vehicle.
- High school diploma (Associate's or Bachelor's degree preferred).
- Valid Virginia driver's license (or ability to meet licensing requirements) with at least 3 years of licensed driving experience.
- Virginia DEQ Stormwater and Erosion & Sediment Control (ESC) certification, or the ability to obtain it within 6 months.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Good organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- 35 years of related experience in construction inspection, environmental compliance, or civil/site development.
- Self-motivated and able to work independently.
- Dependable, punctual, and responsive.
- Home-based travel to inspection sites within approximately a 60-mile radius of Stuart, Virginia (also considering candidates from the Roanoke or Danville areas).
- A company vehicle is provided.
- Occasional visits to the office may be required.
- Most of the work is outdoors at active construction sites, with some office work for reporting and documentation.
This position is well suited for someone who:
- Enjoys working outdoors and driving between job sites.
- Is comfortable inspecting construction activities.
- Has an eye for detail and can write clear reports.
- Can work independently with minimal supervision.
- Is interested in environmental compliance and construction quality control.
If you have experience in construction, surveying, environmental science, civil engineering, or inspection work, this position could be a strong fit. Even without direct erosion control experience, employers may consider candidates who are willing to obtain the required Virginia DEQ certifications within six months.
