What is security service?

Security services are professional services provided to protect people, property, and information from threats such as theft, vandalism, or unauthorized access. These services may include physical security (like guards and patrols), electronic surveillance (like cameras and alarms), and cybersecurity measures to defend against digital attacks. Security service providers can work in various settings, including businesses, residential areas, events, and government facilities. Their main goal is to ensure safety and reduce risks for their clients.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in security service, and why are they important?

To thrive in Security Service, you need strong situational awareness, physical fitness, and a solid understanding of security protocols, often supported by a high school diploma or security guard certification. Familiarity with surveillance systems, access control technologies, and incident reporting software is typically required. Excellent communication, problem-solving abilities, and integrity are standout soft skills in this field. These skills ensure effective protection of people and property, quick response to emergencies, and reliable collaboration with team members and law enforcement.

What are some common challenges faced by security service professionals, and how can they be addressed?

Security service professionals often encounter challenges such as managing stressful situations, adapting to rapidly changing environments, and maintaining vigilance during long shifts. To address these, it's important to develop strong observation skills, stay physically fit, and participate in ongoing training to handle emergencies effectively. Additionally, clear communication with team members and supervisors helps ensure coordinated responses to incidents and fosters a supportive work environment.

Security Technician
Johnson Controls helps customers use energy more productively, reduce carbon emissions, and operate with the precision and resilience required in demanding environments such as data centers, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, advanced manufacturing, and higher education.
Backed by advanced technology, lifecycle services, and an industry-leading field organization, we help turn goals into real-world results and support the systems that keep critical buildings performing where it matters most.
Role Overview
As a Security Technician, you will troubleshoot, service, inspect, and repair intrusion, IP CCTV, access control, and fire alarm systems from multiple manufacturers. You will act as a trusted advisor to customers, explain next steps clearly, and help restore full system functionality with a strong focus on service quality, responsiveness, and reliable outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
  • Locate and diagnose trouble with damaged equipment, wiring, or system components.
  • Readjust, repair, or replace inoperative equipment and test systems to confirm proper operation.
  • Perform repairs and inspections of intrusion detection, IP CCTV, access control, and fire alarm systems.
  • Assist fellow service technicians with system repairs and complete minor repairs, including battery replacement.
  • Test system operation to the customer monitoring center to establish service connectivity.
  • Complete forms, service notes, and customer paperwork accurately and on time.
  • Coordinate inspections and installations with police, fire departments, or other appropriate agencies when needed.
  • Provide recommendations, solutions, and quotes that help customers improve system performance and facility efficiency.
How You Will Do It
  • Own the service outcome with accountability, safety, and integrity, from first diagnosis through final resolution.
  • Stay close to the customer's needs by explaining findings clearly, setting expectations, and helping remove barriers to restoration.
  • Use disciplined troubleshooting and testing practices to confirm repairs, validate monitoring-center connectivity, and reduce repeat issues.
  • Improve every day by documenting work carefully, sharing practical recommendations, and applying lessons learned on future calls.
  • Win as one team by collaborating with fellow technicians, dispatch, and outside agencies to complete the work efficiently and professionally.
Qualifications
  • 1 year of experience in the low-voltage or security industry.
  • Strong general knowledge of major security manufacturer platforms, including Bosch/Radionics, Honeywell, Firelite, Silent Knight, DMP, DSC, and similar systems.
  • Experience servicing and troubleshooting intrusion, IP CCTV, access control, and fire alarm systems in commercial environments.
  • Strong verbal communication skills and the ability to explain service findings and next steps clearly.
  • Valid driver's license with an excellent driving record.
  • Ability to pass thorough background and identity checks.
  • High school diploma or GED.
Nice to Have
  • Ability to read blueprints and schematic drawings.
  • Ability to operate hand and power tools.
  • Ability to unload a ladder from a fleet vehicle and climb ladders as needed.
  • Ability to operate a fleet vehicle safely at all times.
  • Excellent customer service skills and comfort discussing recommendations and service options.
