POSITION SUMMARY
The Hewitt School seeks a security guard/receptionist for the 2026-2027 school year. The security guard/receptionist reports to the interim director of security and is responsible for the safety and security of Hewitt students, faculty, and staff, as well as the School's facilities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Ensure the security and safety of faculty, staff, and students at The Hewitt School
  • Ensure the security of The Hewitt Schoolโ€™s buildings and property
  • Perform duties of fire and emergency drill conductor
  • Perform duties of fire guard and event safety officer
  • Assist in lockdown, fire, and emergency drills
  • Perform duties of a licensed security professional on the Hewitt campus and at special events
  • Inspect the physical security of the school to ensure all entrances and exits are secured
  • Maintain access control to Hewitt by interviewing visitors, establishing proper identification, directing visitors to sign the โ€œvisitors logโ€ when appropriate, and distributing visitor passes
  • Distribute mail, answer telephone calls, and transfer calls when appropriate
  • Familiarity with The Hewitt School Crisis Management Plan
  • Conduct a visual and vertical patrol of the school building upon arrival, at the end of the day, and whenever necessary to ensure building security and safety
  • Perform security/reception duties at the front desk
  • Monitor dismissal at the end of the school day to ensure an orderly and safe departure of the students from the school, and assist in safely loading and unloading students on school buses
  • Observe the security monitor and camera systems on a regular basis to ensure the safety and security of students, faculty, and staff
  • Understand the building alarm system and communicate with the alarm company as necessary to ensure the alarm system is functioning properly and is upgraded as necessary
  • Ensure the security of valuable equipment such as laptops, cameras, spare cell phones, etc.
  • Prepare reports and memos as needed to properly document incidents affecting the School
  • Communicate by cell phone or portable radio with Hewitt administrators, security, faculty, and staff to improve efficiency, safety, and coordination of security team efforts
  • Respond to emergencies involving the School and take appropriate action to restore normalcy
  • Monitor โ€œalertsโ€ distributed by the Office of Emergency Management and take appropriate action
  • Other assignments as directed by the interim director of security, the head of lower school, and the chief operating officer

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
  • Demonstrated commitment to anti-bias education and social justice
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • New York State Security Guard License
  • CPR/AED certification
  • Fire and Emergency Drill Conductor for NYC K-12 Non-Public Schools Certificate (D20)
  • Working knowledge of Google Docs
  • Excellent communication skills

SALARY RANGE
Starting Salary Range: $22.00 to $26.00 per hour (salary based upon, but not limited to, relevant experience and expertise)
