Job description

African Voices seeks individuals with an entrepreneurial spirit to help build on its successful 28 year history. We are seeking committed philanthropists with a passionate love for utilizing the arts to build and empower communities. We are expanding our Board of Directors to attract professionals with a strong background in business development, capacity building and finance. Board members with previous experience in serving on a non-profit board are encouraged to apply. The Board meets three times a year and the standing committees work between meetings to accomplish goals set by the full Board.

African Voices Communications is a non-profit cultural arts organization dedicated to fostering cultural understanding through literature, art, and film. African Voices receives city, state and federal funding as well as enjoying support from private donors. The organization serves NYC's vibrant arts community through the following public programs: African Voices, a literary magazine for emerging artists; and Reel Sisters of the Diaspora Film Festival & Lecture Series, the nation's first Oscar Qualifying festival devoted to women of color.

Your responsibilities would include:

  • Building support for the organization and its mission
  • Fundraising (Give or Get)
  • Attending board meetings (in person or via phone/video conferencing)
  • Participating on at least one committee
  • Strategic Planning & Program Development
  • Building Organization's Endowment Funds
