Job description

Job Description:
Our Opportunity
Chewy's Fulfillment Platform Technology organization builds the systems and operational platforms that enable scalable order fulfillment, partner integrations, inventory visibility, and post-transaction operations across Chewy's supply chain ecosystem. Our team focuses on building resilient, scalable, and operationally efficient platforms that simplify complex fulfillment workflows, improve system interoperability, and enable faster onboarding and integration across a growing network of operational and external systems. We are modernizing fulfillment operations through event-driven architectures, intelligent automation, and platform-first engineering approaches that improve both customer experience and operational agility.
As a Software Engineer III, you will design and operate highly scalable distributed systems that power transaction processing, operational visibility, and fulfillment execution at scale. You will help solve complex operational and engineering challenges while contributing to the long-term evolution of our fulfillment platform ecosystem. We are also evolving our engineering practices to embrace AI-assisted development, modern software delivery patterns, and engineering acceleration tooling. This role is ideal for engineers who are excited to experiment with emerging development workflows, leverage AI-first coding practices responsibly, and help elevate engineering productivity and quality across the team.
This role requires strong technical depth, ownership, and the ability to navigate ambiguity while partnering closely with Product, Operations, Supply Chain, and Engineering customers. You will also help shape engineering culture through mentorship and leadership aligned with Chewy's Operating Principles including Debate Openly & Commit Fully, Operate at Depth, and Accelerate Time.
Does this sound like you? If so, we would love to hear from you! Come run with the Pack!
What You'll Do
  • Design, build, and operate distributed, microservice-oriented platforms using Java, Spring Boot, and AWS technologies.
  • Develop scalable APIs and event-driven integrations that enable seamless communication across internal and external systems.
  • Build systems supporting fulfillment workflows, operational visibility, transaction lifecycle management, and high-scale operational processes.
  • Own features end-to-end - from technical design and architecture reviews through implementation, deployment, monitoring, and operational support.
  • Improve operational scalability by automating manual workflows, enhancing observability, and building resilient platform capabilities.
  • Partner closely with Product, Operations, Supply Chain, and Engineering teams to translate complex business processes into scalable technical solutions.
  • Lead root-cause analysis and operational excellence initiatives across highly integrated distributed systems.
  • Mentor engineers through architecture discussions, code reviews, and engineering guidelines.
  • Contribute to the adoption of modern engineering practices including AI-assisted development workflows, developer productivity tooling, and rapid experimentation frameworks.
  • Explore and help establish effective AI-first software engineering patterns that improve development velocity, testing, documentation, and operational efficiency while maintaining engineering quality standards.
  • Drive engineering excellence across testing, CI/CD, infrastructure-as-code, system resiliency, and secure software development practices.
  • Contribute to long-term platform strategy focused on scalability, operational efficiency, and engineering modernization.

What You'll Need
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 7+ years of professional software engineering experience (or 5+ years with demonstrated technical leadership on production-scale systems).
  • Strong experience building scalable backend systems using Java, Spring Boot, and AWS cloud technologies.
  • Deep understanding of distributed systems concepts including asynchronous processing, event-driven architectures, resiliency patterns, and eventual consistency.
  • Experience designing APIs and integrating complex systems in high-scale production environments.
  • Proven ability to independently drive complex initiatives from ideation through production support with a strong operational ownership approach.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure automation, observability tooling, and modern engineering standards.
  • Familiarity with operational workflows, transaction processing systems, external integrations, or platform-based architectures within B2B, e-commerce, logistics, supply chain, or related technology domains.
  • Interest in modern software engineering practices including AI-assisted development workflows, developer productivity tooling, and continuous experimentation with emerging technologies.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively across technical, operational, and product customers.
  • Exposure to operational analytics and observability platforms such as Datadog, Grafana, or Splunk.
  • Working knowledge of modern front-end technologies such as React or Vue is a plus.
