Seasonal Scientist Process Chemistry information

What does a seasonal scientist in process chemistry do?

A Seasonal Scientist in Process Chemistry assists in the development and optimization of chemical processes, typically during peak research or production periods. Their work involves conducting laboratory experiments, analyzing data, and supporting the scale-up of chemical reactions for manufacturing. Seasonal roles are often temporary and coincide with periods of increased workload. These scientists collaborate with teams to improve efficiency, safety, and sustainability in chemical production. The position is ideal for those seeking hands-on experience in the chemical industry.

What types of projects do seasonal scientist process chemists typically work on, and how do they contribute to larger research and development goals?

As a Seasonal Scientist in Process Chemistry, you’ll often support scale-up and optimization projects that help transition new chemical processes from the lab to pilot or manufacturing scale. Your work will usually involve collaborating with senior chemists and engineers to troubleshoot reaction conditions, analyze yields, and document process improvements. These contributions are vital for ensuring that new compounds are produced efficiently, safely, and within regulatory guidelines. Seasonal roles often provide broad exposure to cross-functional teams and can be an excellent stepping stone for future full-time opportunities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a seasonal scientist in process chemistry, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Seasonal Scientist in Process Chemistry, a solid background in chemistry or chemical engineering, with at least a bachelor's degree in a related field, is essential. Familiarity with laboratory instrumentation, chemical synthesis techniques, and data analysis software like ChemDraw or chromatography systems is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective collaboration skills help individuals excel in this dynamic environment. These competencies ensure that process development is efficient, safe, and meets the rigorous standards necessary for successful chemical manufacturing.

What is the difference between Seasonal Scientist Process Chemistry vs Process Development Scientist?

AspectSeasonal Scientist Process ChemistryProcess Development Scientist
CredentialsBachelor's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related fieldBachelor's or Master's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related field
Work EnvironmentLaboratory and manufacturing settings, often seasonal or temporaryLaboratory, pilot plant, and production facilities, often full-time
Industry UsagePharmaceutical, chemical manufacturing, or biotech industries during peak seasonsDeveloping and optimizing manufacturing processes in similar industries

Seasonal Scientist Process Chemistry roles typically involve temporary work focused on chemical analysis and process support during specific seasons, whereas Process Development Scientists work on designing and improving manufacturing processes on a permanent basis. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds and work environments, but differ mainly in duration and scope of responsibilities.

Job description

About the role:
10x is looking for an outstanding Scientist to join the Process Development team to support the development and commercial launch of new products. The candidate will work cross functionally with Chemistry, Microfluidics, Custom Plastic Consumables, Assay Development, and Production teams to develop, optimize, validate, and transfer new chemistries and processes required to produce 10x reagents and consumables. Candidates must have a broad working knowledge of chemical processes and analytical methods related to polymer, surfactant, or surface chemistry and experience in the use of custom instrumentation. Hands-on experience in process development, scale-up, process implementation and validation in a commercial manufacturing facility is a plus.
Individuals applying for this position must be self-starters, strategic thinkers, action driven, flexible in changing direction and methods, thrive in a fast-paced environment, excel at managing multiple priorities, succeed in communicating with all levels within the organization and provide immediate contribution.
What you will be doing:
  • Develop a deep understanding of the interplay between chemistry, microfluidics, production processes, and molecular biology to identify the root cause of product deviations, troubleshoot them, and identify and implement solutions.
  • Plan and execute experiments, maintain an accurate record of experimental details, in-depth data analysis, and clear communication of these results through documentation and presentations.
  • Write protocols, develop procedures, and maintain accurate records.
  • Communicate and present results clearly and contribute data for making critical design decisions
  • Job may require 10% international travel

Minimum Requirements:
  • Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering or Chemistry and 0-3 years of industry experience.
  • Ability to integrate a broad range of scientific and engineering disciplines.
  • Ability to design meaningful experiments and in-depth analysis of results. Experience using statistical tools for process control.
  • Good documentation skills and ability to communicate experimental design, results and plans through presentations and reports.
  • Understanding of physical chemistry principles to scale up chemical manufacturing processes.
  • Ability to develop, validate and transfer processes to manufacturing or OEM vendors.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills.
  • Desire to be part of a rapidly evolving organization, with a compelling technology, and taking products and processes to the next level.

Preferred Skills & Qualifications:
  • Experience working with automation equipment or custom instrumentation.
  • Developed plastic consumables for microbiology applications particularly microfluidic devices.
  • Proficient in statistical analysis for process control and design of experiments.
