Job description

Be Here. Be Great. Working for a leader in the insurance industry means opportunity for you. Great American Insurance Group's member companies are subsidiaries of American Financial Group. We combine a "small company" culture where your ideas will be heard with "big company" expertise to help you succeed. With over 30 specialty and property and casualty operations, there are always opportunities here to learn and grow.
At Great American, we value and recognize the benefits derived when people with different backgrounds and experiences work together to achieve business results. Our goal is to create a workplace where all employees feel included, empowered, and enabled to perform at their best.
The AI Innovation Lab serves as the organization's proving ground for emerging artificial intelligence technologies. This role focuses on applied AI research tied directly to real business needs, rather than academic research or traditional software development. The technologist evaluates, prototypes, and validates AI solutions, determining which technologies are ready for enterprise adoption and which are not. Successful proofs-of-concept are transitioned to IT delivery teams for production implementation.
This role is ideal for someone who thrives on variety, rapid learning, and experimentation, and who enjoys working at the intersection of advanced technology, business problem-solving, and enterprise systems.
Great American's culture is built on connection, shared learning, and strong relationships. To support this, employees in this role are expected to be on-site a minimum of two days a week if local to Cincinnati, with the potential to work three days remotely. Core in-office days are Tuesday and Thursday.
Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities
  • Evaluate emerging AI technologies (e.g., agent frameworks, RAG architectures, AI orchestration patterns) against business needs and enterprise constraints
  • Build rapid prototypes to demonstrate technical feasibility and business value
  • Document findings, including both successful and unsuccessful experiments, to guide enterprise AI direction
  • Partner with Enterprise Architecture to ensure alignment with API-first and production-ready design principles
  • Enable business-side data science capabilities through self-service tools and analytics environments
  • Implement and assess agent frameworks, Model Context Protocol (MCP) integrations, and AI workflows
  • Communicate complex technical concepts clearly to business stakeholders and executive audiences
  • Mentor team members and contribute to a culture of continuous learning and innovation

Job Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Statistics, or related fields. 3 or more years of demonstrated AI/ML expertise.
  • Strong Python programming skills and experience with ML frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow)
  • Proven ability to build working prototypes, not just theoretical models
  • Strong learning agility and objective evaluation skills for new technologies
  • Understanding of API design and enterprise system integration
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Intellectual curiosity and comfort operating in ambiguous, evolving environments

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in insurance, financial services, or other regulated industries
  • Hands-on experience with agentic AI frameworks (e.g., LangChain, LangGraph, CrewAI)
  • Familiarity with Model Context Protocol (MCP) or similar integration standards
  • Experience with Microsoft Azure cloud services
  • Exposure to actuarial, underwriting, or claims workflows
  • Understanding of enterprise architecture and production constraints
  • Experience transitioning prototypes or research initiatives into production teams
  • Python, Java, Microsoft Azure, REST APIs, LLM APIs and gateways, vector databases, agent frameworks, Docker/Kubernetes, SQL and NoSQL databases. Tooling will evolve over time-adaptability is more important than expertise in any single platform.

Business Unit:

Benefits:

Full-time employees have access to medical, dental, and vision coverage, wellness plans, parental leave, adoption assistance, and tuition reimbursement.
