Job Description
Position Summary
The Head Rugby Coach is responsible for leading and developing a comprehensive rugby program that promotes excellence in athletics, character, academics, and sportsmanship. The coach will foster a positive and competitive environment that supports student-athlete growth while serving as a visible ambassador for the school and its mission. The Head Rugby Coach reports directly to the Athletic Director and is a seasonal stipend position.
Essential Responsibilities
• Develop and oversee all aspects of the rugby program, including varsity and sub-varsity levels.
• Create a culture that emphasizes discipline, accountability, teamwork, leadership, and respect.
• Plan and conduct practices that develop rugby skills, fitness, player safety, and game strategy.
• Recruit and retain student-athletes while promoting the growth of the rugby program within the school community.
• Supervise, mentor, and evaluate assistant coaches and volunteer staff.
• Coordinate team scheduling, travel arrangements, equipment management, and game-day operations.
• Communicate effectively and regularly with student-athletes, parents, school administration, and the athletic department.
• Manage the program budget and assist with fundraising initiatives as needed.
• Ensure compliance with all school policies, league regulations, governing body requirements, and player safety protocols.
• Model and promote sportsmanship, character development, and respect for officials, opponents, and teammates.
• Support the academic success and personal development of student-athletes.
• Organize preseason meetings, team activities, community engagement opportunities, and end-of-season recognition programs.
Qualifications
• College degree preferred; degree in education, sports management, exercise science, leadership, or a related field is a plus.
• Minimum of three (3) years of successful coaching experience at the high school, club, collegiate, or equivalent level required.
• Prior head coaching experience preferred.
• Previous rugby playing experience at the club, collegiate, or professional level strongly preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to develop student-athletes in the areas of skill development, leadership, discipline, teamwork, and character formation.
• Proven experience in planning and administering practices, competitions, travel, budgeting, and program operations.
• Strong knowledge of rugby rules, player safety standards, and contemporary coaching methodologies.
• Demonstrated success in recruiting, retaining, and developing student-athletes.
• Prior rugby coaching and/or playing experience required.
• Demonstrated ability to teach rugby fundamentals, tactics, and player development.
• Experience coaching high school-aged athletes preferred.
• Strong leadership, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
• Ability to motivate and mentor young people in a positive and constructive manner.
• Commitment to fostering an inclusive, safe, and mission-driven team culture.
• Current First Aid/CPR certification or willingness to obtain certification.
• Must satisfy all background check, safe parish, and coaching credential requirements.
