Job description

Position Description This posting will be used to fill full-time, represented, safety sensitive Maintenance Worker II, positions in the Bureau of Highways , Traffic Maintenance with the Department of Public Works. This is manual labor in the performance of unskilled and limited semi-skilled tasks of a physically demanding nature. NATURE AND VARIETY OF WORK Work involves performance of manual tasks of more than ordinary difficulty requiring some skills or special knowledge acquired through on-the-job training or experience.

Work may also include serving as lead worker for a small number of workers of a lower or equal grade in the absence of the crew leader. Work is performed with some independence under the supervision of a superior who assigns work and makes frequent inspections to ensure proper performance of work. Examples of Duties and Knowledge, Skills and Abilities EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: (Note: The duties and responsibilities enumerated in this class specification are for the purpose of determining a common set of minimum qualifications and salary level for all positions in this class.

They are not intended to include all of the essential functions of all positions in the class.) Operates various types of equipment and performs manual labor in the maintenance, repair, and minor construction of roads, storm drains, and other public facilities, traffic signs and markings, and related facilities; drives trucks for routine transportation, and hauling. Takes out, installs, repairs, and does concrete work on curbs, gutters, and sidewalks; digs out broken spots in street surfaces, fills joints and cracks; mows grass with tractor mower; acts as skilled trades helper. Stripes roads; paints crosswalks and various messages on roads; installs and maintains traffic sighs; operates paint-striping and road marking equipment

Operates light trucks, and related equipment as a necessary adjunct to the performance of regular duties or on a relief or seasonal basis. Performs related work as required. Minimum Qualifications Education: understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Experience: One ( 1 ) or more years experience providing familiarity with the area of assignment. ( i.e. work performed in public works to include operating dump trucks and related equipment and performing manual labor work

Additional Requirements: A valid non-commercial Class C motor vehicle operator's license. As determined by area of assignment, a valid commercial Class B motor vehicle operator's license. NOTE: Applicants must possess at minimum a valid Non-Provisional Class C motor vehicle operator's license.

Successful candidates will be required to obtain a Medical Certificate as mandated by Federal law for a CDL Learner's Permit. A CDL Learner's Permit must be obtained within 45 days of the hire to allow for adequate CDL training. Successful candidates must obtain a Class B CDL within six (6) months of hire.

NOTE: This is a Safety Sensitive position and employees in this position are subject to controlled dangerous substance (CDS) and alcohol testing. NOTE: Longevity pay is available based on years of service. Supplemental Qualifications ** For positions in HIGHWAYS (TRAFFIC MAINTENANCE) preference will be given to candidates with the following: 1.) Experience creating and installing of traffic signs 2.) Experience with operating a paint striper for pavement markings

3.) Possession of a valid commercial driver's license (CDL).
