Portfolio Manager Asset Based Lending

THIRD COAST BANK

Dallas, TX • On-site

Full-time

Posted 8 days ago

Job description

The Senior Portfolio Manager | Asset-Based Lending is a senior member of the Bank’s Asset-Based Lending team responsible for the ongoing credit, portfolio management, and risk oversight of complex ABL relationships. This individual will partner closely with ABL Relationship Managers, Credit, Field Examination, Loan Operations, and other internal stakeholders to support the growth and management of the Bank’s asset-based lending portfolio.

The role requires significant experience with borrowing base structures, collateral analysis, financial performance monitoring, loan documentation, and complex commercial credit. The Senior Portfolio Manager will serve as a primary credit resource within the ABL team and is expected to independently manage relationships throughout the credit lifecycle, from underwriting and closing through ongoing monitoring, amendments, renewals, and problem resolution.

This position is designed for an experienced ABL professional capable of operating with a high degree of autonomy while maintaining disciplined credit standards and providing the portfolio infrastructure necessary to support continued growth of the Bank’s ABL platform.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Portfolio Management & Credit Oversight

  • Manage a portfolio of asset-based lending relationships, maintaining comprehensive knowledge of each borrower’s financial condition, collateral position, operating performance, liquidity, and overall risk profile.
  • Serve as a primary point of coordination between Relationship Management, Credit Administration, Field Examination, Loan Operations, and other internal partners.
  • Independently analyze borrower financial statements, projections, liquidity, cash flow, leverage, working capital trends, and collateral performance.
  • Monitor borrower performance against approved credit expectations and proactively identify emerging risks, deterioration, or changes in collateral quality.
  • Prepare and present annual reviews, renewals, amendments, waivers, modifications, and other credit approval requests.
  • Maintain appropriate risk ratings and recommend changes when warranted by borrower performance or other developments.
  • Ensure credit files, financial reporting, collateral monitoring, and approval documentation remain accurate, current, and consistent with Bank policy.

Asset-Based Lending

  • Review and analyze borrowing-base certificates and supporting collateral information, including accounts receivable, inventory, reserves, ineligibles, dilution, concentration, and availability.
  • Evaluate collateral eligibility and advance rates and identify trends that may affect borrowing availability or the Bank’s collateral position.
  • Monitor collateral reporting requirements and ensure exceptions are identified, escalated, and resolved appropriately.
  • Review field examination results and work with internal and external field exam resources to address findings and determine appropriate credit or structural responses.
  • Analyze accounts receivable aging, inventory reporting, customer concentrations, dilution trends, turnover, and other collateral metrics.
  • Understand and administer complex ABL structures, including revolving lines of credit, term loans, seasonal facilities, acquisition financing, and other working-capital-oriented structures.
  • Monitor excess availability, liquidity, covenant compliance, reserves, dominion arrangements, and other structural protections.
  • Partner with the ABL team to structure facilities appropriately based upon borrower risk, collateral quality, liquidity needs, and overall relationship considerations.

Underwriting & Transaction Execution

  • Partner with Relationship Managers on new ABL opportunities, including initial credit assessment, due diligence, structuring, underwriting, and closing.
  • Prepare or oversee detailed credit underwriting and approval materials for new and existing relationships.
  • Evaluate transaction structure, collateral coverage, repayment capacity, enterprise risk, management capabilities, industry dynamics, and potential downside scenarios.
  • Coordinate with internal and external legal counsel on loan documentation and ensure approved credit terms are accurately reflected in definitive documents.
  • Assist in managing transactions through closing, including satisfaction of credit approval conditions, collateral requirements, documentation, and operational readiness.
  • Provide informed credit judgment regarding proposed structures, exceptions, and changes to existing facilities.

Risk Management

  • Maintain a strong understanding of Bank credit policy, ABL procedures, regulatory requirements, and applicable risk-management standards.
  • Proactively identify deteriorating credits and communicate concerns to ABL leadership and Credit Administration.
  • Develop appropriate action plans for criticized or higher-risk relationships and closely monitor progress against established objectives.
  • Work collaboratively with Special Assets when relationships require elevated monitoring, restructuring, or transfer.
  • Maintain disciplined portfolio management practices while supporting the Bank’s strategic growth objectives.
  • Participate in internal portfolio reviews, credit discussions, regulatory examinations, and audits as required.

Leadership & Partnership

  • Serve as an experienced resource and subject-matter expert for junior Portfolio Managers, Underwriters, Analysts, and other members of the ABL team.
  • Provide coaching and technical guidance related to ABL underwriting, collateral analysis, portfolio management, and credit structuring.
  • Develop strong working relationships across Corporate Banking, Credit Administration, Treasury Management, Loan Operations, and other areas of the Bank.
  • Partner with Relationship Managers in client interactions when credit, collateral, or structural expertise is required.
  • Help develop scalable portfolio-management processes and best practices as the Bank continues to expand its ABL capabilities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, or a related field required.
  • 10+ years of commercial banking, commercial credit, portfolio management, or underwriting experience.
  • Significant direct experience in Asset-Based Lending strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex middle-market commercial credit relationships.
  • Strong working knowledge of borrowing base structures, accounts receivable and inventory financing, collateral eligibility, advance rates, reserves, dilution, field examinations, and collateral monitoring.
  • Strong financial statement analysis, cash flow analysis, and commercial credit underwriting capabilities.
  • Experience underwriting and managing revolving credit facilities and other working-capital-oriented financing structures.
  • Thorough understanding of commercial loan documentation, covenants, collateral perfection, and credit administration.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify credit deterioration and proactively manage emerging portfolio risk.
  • Ability to independently manage multiple complex relationships and transactions in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to clearly articulate credit recommendations and risk considerations to senior management and credit approval authorities.
  • Strong judgment, attention to detail, and ability to balance prudent risk management with the commercial objectives of the Bank.

Preferred Experience

  • 10–15+ years of commercial banking and credit experience with substantial tenure directly supporting an Asset-Based Lending platform.
  • Experience with middle-market borrowers and complex working-capital facilities.
  • Experience with syndicated or participated ABL facilities.
  • Experience working with external field examination firms, appraisers, legal counsel, and other third-party diligence providers.
  • Experience managing borrowers through periods of underperformance, covenant default, liquidity pressure, or restructuring.
  • Prior experience mentoring or developing junior credit and portfolio-management professionals.
