Job description

BASIC FUNCTIONS:
This position is responsible for technology and development leadership for LexisNexis CounselLink, including multiple software development teams supporting product delivery, platform modernization, architecture, operational quality, and engineering execution. This role is based in Raleigh, North Carolina, and will help lead and grow the CounselLink engineering organization while partnering with distributed teams, product leaders, architecture, security, operations, and business stakeholders.

The Director of Engineering will set technical direction, ensure architectural and engineering standards are followed, and provide management, coaching, and execution leadership to accomplish on-time, efficient delivery of product development goals. This position will guide teams working across AWS, Java-based services, enterprise search with Solr, LLM-enabled product capabilities, Model Context Protocol integrations, and MCP Apps.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 12+ years of software development experience.
  • 5+ years of software development management experience.
  • Experience leading multiple engineering teams, engineering managers, senior engineers, or technical leads.
  • BS Engineering/Computer Science or equivalent experience required; advanced degree preferred.
  • Experience with enterprise SaaS, cloud-based, or large-scale commercial software products preferred.
  • Experience with legal technology, enterprise workflow, financial systems, or compliance-heavy domains preferred.

TECHNICAL SKILLS:

  • Strong experience leading engineering teams building and operating software on AWS.
  • Strong background with Java/J2EE or modern Java-based enterprise application development.
  • Experience with Apache Solr or similar enterprise search technologies.
  • Practical understanding of LLM-based application development, including retrieval, evaluation, guardrails, observability, and production readiness.
  • Familiarity with Model Context Protocol, MCP servers, MCP clients, and MCP Apps.
  • Strong knowledge of large, complex systems and architectural principles.
  • Proven ability to use technical metrics to drive business and engineering decisions.
  • Experience with database technology, data modeling, optimization, and complex data systems.
  • Experience with Agile software development methodologies and modern engineering practices.
  • Proven ability to lead test-driven development, code quality practices, design reviews, and architecture reviews.
  • Experience partnering with internal teams, external technology resources, offshore teams, managed services, or staff augmentation partners.
  • Strong budgeting, planning, communication, change management, and stakeholder management skills.

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Lead multiple internal and external engineering teams supporting CounselLink.
  • Manage, coach, hire, develop, and retain engineering managers, technical leads, and software engineers.
  • Recommend and guide technical strategy across CounselLink product capabilities.
  • Partner with Product Management, Architecture, UX, QA, Security, DevOps, and business stakeholders to deliver product roadmap commitments.
  • Ensure enterprise architecture standards, security standards, software development processes, and engineering best practices are followed.
  • Guide modernization efforts across AWS, Java services, Solr search, LLM-enabled workflows, MCP integrations, and MCP Apps.
  • Use engineering, operational, and delivery metrics to identify risks, improve execution, and support business decisions.
  • Lead planning across project scope, budget, resources, timelines, risks, and dependencies.
  • Support customer-impacting issues, production incidents, and technical escalations.
  • Foster innovation, accountability, inclusion, and continuous improvement across the engineering organization.
  • Ensure staff receive clear goals, frequent feedback, coaching, training, and resources needed to succeed.
  • Carry out management responsibilities in accordance with organizational policies, procedures, and applicable laws.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
U.S. National Base Pay Range: $136,100 - $252,800. Geographic differentials may apply in some locations to better reflect local market rates. This job is eligible for an annual incentive bonus.
