What does a Scrum Master do?

A scrum master is an information technology (IT) professional who helps manage information exchange among their team in an Agile environment. A scrum master is not the leader of a team. They are the facilitator of exchanges and interactions with the team. They help build consensus regarding next steps on the team, keep everyone on task following the agreed upon rules, and do everything they can to maximize the team’s performance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Scrum Master, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Scrum Master, you need a solid understanding of Agile methodologies, Scrum framework, and often a relevant certification such as Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) or Professional Scrum Master (PSM). Familiarity with project management tools like Jira, Trello, or Azure DevOps is typically required. Excellent facilitation, communication, and conflict resolution skills help Scrum Masters guide teams and foster collaboration. These skills and qualities are crucial for enabling high-performing teams, ensuring effective delivery, and continuously improving processes within Agile environments.

How does a Scrum Master typically facilitate collaboration between development teams and product owners?

A Scrum Master plays a crucial role in fostering effective communication and collaboration between development teams and product owners. They facilitate regular Scrum ceremonies, such as sprint planning, reviews, and retrospectives, ensuring all voices are heard and that priorities are clear. Job Overview

Title:  Scrum Master
Sector: Information Technology / Enterprise Applications
Seniority: Senior Level
Location: Oakland, CA
Job Type: Hybrid – Onsite Tuesday through Thursday
Contract Length: 6 Months
Compensation: $71.28 - $83.81/hour

Role Overview

Pivot Point Solutions is seeking an experienced Scrum Master to support Agile delivery within a large-scale, multi-year ERP transformation. This role will lead one to two cross-functional teams supporting SAP S/4HANA, SuccessFactors, and related enterprise systems across areas such as finance, supply chain, human resources, enterprise health and safety, data, reporting, and analytics.

This position requires more than traditional Scrum facilitation. The Scrum Master will operate within a hybrid Agile environment, balancing Agile team delivery with structured program governance, SAP implementation methodologies, cross-workstream dependencies, data migration, testing, release planning, and cutover activities.

Your Day-to-Day Activities
  • Serve as Scrum Master and servant leader for one to two cross-functional SAP Agile teams.
  • Facilitate Daily Stand-ups, Sprint Planning, Backlog Refinement, Sprint Reviews, and Retrospectives.
  • Partner with Product Owners, Business Analysts, SAP consultants, functional leads, technical teams, and system integration partners.
  • Maintain effective sprint backlogs and facilitate story refinement, prioritization, estimation, and sizing.
  • Identify and help resolve blockers, dependencies, risks, and delivery challenges across SAP and legacy-system workstreams.
  • Coordinate Agile team activities with structured program governance, including release plans, RAID management, milestones, and stage-gate requirements.
  • Support integration between Agile delivery and traditionally managed activities such as data migration, testing, deployment, and cutover.
  • Participate in scaled Agile activities including PI Planning, Scrum of Scrums, System Demos, and cross-team planning.
  • Collaborate with Release Train Engineers, Solution Architects, other Scrum Masters, and program leadership to synchronize delivery.
  • Track and communicate Agile delivery metrics such as velocity, burndown, backlog health, and team performance.
  • Use Jira and Confluence or comparable tools to manage delivery activities and maintain visibility into team progress.
  • Support SAP Activate practices and alignment between Agile delivery and SAP implementation phases.
The Job Requirements
  • 5+ years of experience serving as a Scrum Master within enterprise-scale Agile programs.
  • Experience supporting an SAP implementation, ERP transformation, or ERP production/support organization.
  • Experience with SAP S/4HANA, SuccessFactors, SAP ECC, or comparable enterprise ERP platforms.
  • Strong knowledge of Scrum and Kanban practices within complex delivery environments.
  • Experience working within hybrid Agile/Waterfall governance models.
  • Experience managing cross-team dependencies, blockers, risks, and competing priorities.
  • Experience participating in scaled Agile delivery using SAFe or a comparable framework.
  • Familiarity with SAP Activate and the lifecycle of large SAP implementations.
  • Proficiency with Jira for backlog, sprint, and Agile delivery management.
  • Strong facilitation, coaching, stakeholder management, and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Ability to work onsite in Oakland Tuesday through Thursday.
You'll Stand Out If You Have
  • Direct Scrum Master experience on an SAP S/4HANA implementation or transformation.
  • Experience supporting SAP SuccessFactors delivery teams.
  • Experience supporting S/4HANA data workstreams involving data conversion, cleansing, migration, reporting, or analytics.
  • Experience working within a major utility or similarly complex regulated enterprise.
  • Hands-on experience with SAP Activate and SAFe in the same transformation environment.
  • Experience coordinating SAP functional teams such as FI/CO, MM, PM, SD, HR/HCM or SuccessFactors.
  • Familiarity working alongside SAP technical teams involving Basis, ABAP, integrations, or PI/PO.
  • Experience with large system integrators and geographically or functionally distributed SAP delivery teams.
