What does a Scrum Master do?

A scrum master is an information technology (IT) professional who helps manage information exchange among their team in an Agile environment. A scrum master is not the leader of a team. They are the facilitator of exchanges and interactions with the team. They help build consensus regarding next steps on the team, keep everyone on task following the agreed upon rules, and do everything they can to maximize the team’s performance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Scrum Master, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Scrum Master, you need a solid understanding of Agile methodologies, Scrum framework, and often a relevant certification such as Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) or Professional Scrum Master (PSM). Familiarity with project management tools like Jira, Trello, or Azure DevOps is typically required. Excellent facilitation, communication, and conflict resolution skills help Scrum Masters guide teams and foster collaboration. These skills and qualities are crucial for enabling high-performing teams, ensuring effective delivery, and continuously improving processes within Agile environments.

How does a Scrum Master typically facilitate collaboration between development teams and product owners?

The Scrum Master also works to remove obstacles that impede progress and helps maintain focus on delivering value. By promoting transparency and a culture of continuous improvement, they help align the team's efforts with the product owner's vision and business goals.

The ideal candidate brings extensive hands-on Windchill experience, a solid understanding of systems engineering concepts, and a passion for enabling engineering excellence through modern PLM solutions.

What you will be doing:

  • Define and execute the Windchill PLM product vision and roadmap - gather and prioritize requirements from engineering, manufacturing, quality, and supply chain stakeholders; translate business needs into user stories and acceptance criteria; manage the product backlog; and define KPIs to measure platform performance, adoption, and stakeholder satisfaction.
  • Own and optimize core PLM processes - including Document Management, Change Management, Part & BOM Management, CAD Data Management, Workflow Automation, and Configuration Management - and govern tool enhancements, upgrades, testing, deployments, and compliance with security, product integrity, and regulatory requirements.
  • Advance Digital Thread and engineering integration - apply Digital Thread principles to improve data continuity and traceability across engineering disciplines, support PTC Creo users, and lead integration initiatives between Windchill and enterprise systems including ERP, MES, and CAD applications.
  • Lead Agile delivery and cross-functional collaboration - work with distributed, multidisciplinary, and international Agile/Scrum teams to deliver high-quality platform enhancements, manage stakeholder expectations, lead UAT and production deployments, and drive user training and change management initiatives to maximize adoption.

Basic Requirements:

  • Associate's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems with 4+ years of hands-on experience with PTC Windchill PLM, OR
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems with 2+ years of hands-on experience with PTC Windchill PLM, OR
  • Master's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, OR
  • PhD in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, OR
  • 6+ years of hands-on experience with PTC Windchill PLM in lieu of a degree

Preferred Requirements:

  • Demonstrated experience working in Agile/Scrum environments, including defining requirements, writing user stories, and managing product backlogs.
  • Knowledge of engineering change management, product structures, BOM management, and document control within a PLM environment.
  • Hands-on experience with Windchill configuration, customization, upgrades, and deployment projects, combined with advanced expertise in PTC Creo and familiarity with ECAD environments (EPLAN, Zuken E3, or CR8000) and enterprise integration technologies (REST APIs, SQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, XML).
  • Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO), SAFe certification, or equivalent Agile credential, with a strong track record of delivering measurable business value through PLM platform improvements and cross-functional Agile delivery.
  • Deep understanding of mechanical and/or electrical engineering design methodologies, Systems Design Integration, Digital Thread concepts, and product integrity, liability, and certification frameworks - ideally gained in an industrial, manufacturing, or power systems environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence stakeholders, communicate complex technical topics clearly across all organizational levels and global user communities, and drive user adoption through effective training and change management - proficiency in German is a meaningful advantage given global team collaboration.

This role is ideal for someone who combines strong PLM domain knowledge, hands-on experience with PTC Windchill, and Agile product ownership skills to deliver business value through effective management of enterprise PLM solutions.
