Scrum Master Software Engineer information

What is a Scrum Master Software Engineer?

A Scrum Master Software Engineer is a professional who combines the technical skills of a software engineer with the leadership and facilitation responsibilities of a Scrum Master. This role involves guiding a software development team in following Agile and Scrum methodologies, helping to remove obstacles, and ensuring effective collaboration and communication within the team. In addition to writing and reviewing code, a Scrum Master Software Engineer organizes sprints, leads meetings, and works to continuously improve team processes. The goal is to deliver high-quality software products efficiently while maintaining a positive and productive team environment.

How does a Scrum Master Software Engineer balance coding responsibilities with facilitating Agile processes within their team?

A Scrum Master Software Engineer typically divides their time between hands-on software development tasks and serving as the Agile facilitator for their team. This means they not only contribute code and participate in technical decision-making, but also lead daily stand-ups, remove impediments, and ensure the team adheres to Scrum principles. Balancing these responsibilities requires strong time management, clear communication, and the ability to prioritize the team's needs over individual tasks. This dual role fosters close collaboration with product owners, engineers, and stakeholders, creating a dynamic work environment focused on both technical excellence and continuous improvement.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Scrum Master Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Scrum Master Software Engineer, you need a solid background in software development, agile methodologies, and a relevant degree or certification like Certified ScrumMaster (CSM). Familiarity with Agile tools such as Jira, Confluence, Git, and CI/CD systems is typically required. Exceptional communication, facilitation, and problem-solving skills help foster collaboration and guide teams through challenges. These competencies are vital for driving project success, maintaining agile best practices, and enabling high-performing development teams.

What is the difference between Scrum Master Software Engineer vs Software Developer?

While a Scrum Master Software Engineer focuses on facilitating Agile processes and team support, a Software Developer primarily concentrates on creating and maintaining software applications. Both roles often work closely in tech projects but serve different functions within the development lifecycle.

Can a Scrum Master Software Engineer become a Scrum Master?

A Scrum Master Software Engineer can transition to a Scrum Master role by gaining relevant certifications such as Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) and developing skills in facilitation, coaching, and Agile practices. Prior experience in Agile teams and understanding of Scrum frameworks are valuable for making this transition.

Is Scrum Master Software Engineer still in demand?

Scrum Master Software Engineers are in high demand as organizations adopt Agile methodologies to improve project management and product delivery. Skills in Scrum, Agile frameworks, and tools like Jira increase employability, and demand is expected to grow with the continued emphasis on collaborative and iterative development environments.

Kestra is dedicated to empowering independent financial professionals—including traditional and hybrid RIAs—to grow their businesses and deliver exceptional client service. We combine advanced business management technology with personalized consulting to provide unmatched scale, efficiency, and support. Our advisor-focused culture is built on innovation and advocacy, enabling advisors to offer comprehensive securities and investment advisory solutions to their clients.

Lead with Purpose. Partner with Impact.

Kestra is seeking a talented and motivated Scrum Master to support our Data, Analytics & AI Platform group. In this role, you will support multiple Scrum and/or Kanban teams, using Agile practices to drive efficiency, predictability and collaboration across dynamic Data, Analytics and AI deliverables.

What you’ll Do:
  • Facilitate all Scrum ceremonies, including sprint planning, daily standups, backlog refinement, retrospectives, and release planning.
  • Partner with Product Owners to maintain healthy backlog management, prioritization, and value-driven delivery.
  • Identify, remove, and elevate impediments, risks, and organizational barriers that impact team performance and delivery.
  • Coordinate dependencies, issue resolution, and collaboration across distributed teams and multiple time zones.
  • Coach teams, Product Owners, and stakeholders on Agile principles, Scrum practices, continuous improvement, and self-organization.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, transparency, collaboration, healthy communication, and continuous learning.
  • Lead and continuously improve release planning and delivery processes, enabling engineering teams to focus on execution and Product Owners to focus on business priorities.
  • Use Agile metrics and performance data to identify trends, measure team effectiveness, and drive corrective actions and process improvements.
  • Promote engineering best practices, including predictable delivery, automation, continuous delivery, technical debt management, and product sustainability.
  • Stay current with industry practices; experiment with new techniques to improve teams’ Agile maturity and effectiveness
  • Uphold Kestra’s core values (Make it Happen, One Team, Serve) in daily interactions and delivery commitments.
What You Bring:
  • Must have minimum of 3 years of Scrum Master experience.
  • Must have 5+ years of overall technology experience.
  • Solid understanding of the software development lifecycle and Agile methodologies, including Scrum and Kanban (and experience operating as a Scrum Master in both frameworks)
  • Strong experience with Jira, or a similar issue-tracking tool. Experience with Jira Service Management is desired.
  • Experience with distributed teams across multiple time zones and resolving the challenges this can present.
  • Experience with data lifecycle & pipelines (ingestion → transformation → consumption)
  • Awareness of data quality, lineage, and governance dependencies.
  • Exposure to analytics and AI/ML workflows is a plus, including supporting teams delivering data science and machine learning use cases.
  • Experience working in the financial industry and awareness of basic financial concepts.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Internal Application Policy:

Internal applicants must be in good standing and have a minimum of 1 year of service with Kestra. Internal applicants must also have a minimum of 1 year service in current role unless approved by EVP.

Benefits to support you:
  • Competitive pay and benefits with a large employer (over 1600 employees nationwide)
  • 401(k), health insurance, and a competitive benefits package
  • Work in a supportive, collaborative environment committed to professional excellence
  • Help clients navigate meaningful financial decisions with confidence
  • Opportunities for training, development, and long-term growth within the firm
Kestra Values:

Our Mission is Powering Financial Independence, enabling the growth and success of investing clients and the advisors who serve them. We do that by living our values: Serve, Make it Happen, and One team.
