Job description

  • Position Summary
    • The Certified Surgical Technologist First Assistant actively participates in the on-going management of supply inventories, surgical equipment, operating room suite readiness and direct clinical and technical assistance to the surgeon while performing operative and invasive procedures. This position requires an expanded knowledge of surgical instrumentation, surgical techniques, human anatomy, surgical retracting, and wound closure. Assembly of complex mechanical devices, strong anticipatory skills, hand/eye dexterity and sequential planning are required. The Certified Surgical Technologist First Assistant is assigned the role of first assistant or surgical scrub technologist depending on departmental demands. All activities are under the direct supervision of the perioperative registered nurse or operating physician. Must meet departmental expectations as it relates to quality and quantity of work. Performs any related duties as assigned.

    • High School Diploma - Preferred
    • Graduate of a Surgical Technician Program - Required
    • Competency as evident by maintaining national certification within subspecialty area
  • Experience
    • 2-3 Years operating room scrub experience with laparoscopic, open and da Vinci robotic GYN procedures - Required
  • License & Certification
    • National Certification - Required
    • Graduate of an ORT course and Certification from program - Required
  • Core Job Functions
    • Light sources, instruments and accessory equipment are consistently checked for proper functioning. Performs as an assistant to attending physician under the direction of a physician or registered nurse. Cleans and prepares rooms between procedures by cleaning counters, light sources, carts, emptying suction canisters and sets up appropriate equipment for next procedure.
    • Perform as buddy scrub as required. Build relationships with surgeons. Network with scrub technicians.
    • Correct procedure card for supplies and instruments is identified and used. Sufficient quantities of supplies and instruments are pulled for each procedure. Case carts are completed accurately and promptly.
    • Participates in and serves on at least one unit based or system committee. Acts as a resource and preceptor for newly hired staff.
    • Maintains certification and encourages 100% departmental compliance in certification status.
