What is a Scripting job?

A scripting job involves writing and maintaining scripts to automate tasks, process data, or enhance software functionality. Scripting professionals use languages like Python, Bash, or PowerShell to streamline workflows and improve efficiency. These roles are common in IT, DevOps, and software development, helping teams reduce manual work and errors. Strong problem-solving skills and knowledge of system environments are essential for success in this field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Scripting position, and why are they important?

To excel in a Scripting role, you need strong proficiency in one or more scripting languages such as Python, Bash, or PowerShell, typically supported by experience in automation or software development. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, continuous integration tools, and operating system environments (Linux/Windows) is highly valuable. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication are key soft skills in this position. These abilities enable efficient automation, reliable task execution, and collaboration with IT, development, or operations teams.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of someone in a Scripting role?

Professionals in Scripting roles spend their days designing, writing, and maintaining scripts that automate routine tasks, system processes, or application workflows. They often troubleshoot and debug existing scripts, collaborate closely with developers, system administrators, and DevOps teams, and ensure seamless system integrations. Staying up-to-date with new scripting techniques and tools is also a common part of the job, as is documenting scripts for future reference and team knowledge-sharing. This role offers a dynamic mix of independent problem-solving and teamwork, with opportunities to create tangible efficiency improvements across an organization.

Job description

Job Description
Senior Vehicle Test Automation Scripter
Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to the Milford Proving Ground in Milford (MI) three times per week, at minimum.
At General Motors, our product teams are redefining mobility. Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences that are designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. We're turning today's impossible into tomorrow's standard - from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features.
Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale.
The Role
As a Senior Software Engineer - Vehicle Test Automation Scripter, you are a technical leader who architects, builds, and continuously improves robust automated test solutions that ensure the quality and reliability of vehicle software across multiple programs, features, and releases. You will own complex automation initiatives end-to-end, shaping strategy, standards, and best practices for vehicle-level test automation within your domain.
You will partner closely with Test Champions and cross-functional teams to translate ambiguous test needs into scalable automation approaches, reduce test setup and execution time at scale, and drive measurable improvements in efficiency and stability. You are expected to work with high autonomy, make sound technical decisions, influence roadmaps, and mentor others in scripting, tooling, and automation practices.
In addition to your leadership in automation, you will perform core Vehicle Software Test Engineer responsibilities, including owning complex test requests end-to-end, building test plans, executing tests, triaging defects, and clearly communicating results and risks to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
What You'll Do
  • Lead the design, development, and maintenance of robust, reusable robot scripts that minimize script-related failures, scale across multiple programs and features, and support rapidly evolving requirements.
  • Serve as a go-to technical expert for vehicle test automation, providing guidance on scripting patterns, tool selection, and architecture decisions for complex or cross-domain test requests.
  • Partner with Test Champions and product/test teams to understand high-priority test needs, define automation strategy, and deliver customized, scalable scripting solutions for active and future test requests.
  • Apply advanced proficiency in scripting tools and languages (e.g., Robot Framework, Autobot, Python, VSpy Automation, PowerShell, etc.) to build new automation capabilities and contribute significant enhancements to AIRE tools, templates, and workflows adopted by the team.
  • Own and drive automation work through the full delivery lifecycle, including backlog refinement, sprint planning, estimation, execution, and on-time delivery of commitments in alignment with team and program priorities.
  • Set and enforce code quality standards through effective GitHub practices, including pull requests, code reviews, static checks, and automated validations; proactively identify and address technical debt in automation code and infrastructure.
  • Develop clear, reusable documentation and onboarding materials for automation frameworks, tools, and scripts to enable broader team adoption and maintainability.
  • Demonstrate continuous technical development, proactively exploring new tools, frameworks, and techniques and applying them to production tests and automation solutions that increase stability and throughput.
  • Mentor and coach other engineers and test engineers in scripting, debugging, test design, and automation best practices.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical/Computer Engineering, or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in software development and/or software test automation in complex, integrated systems, with a proven track record of delivering high-impact automation solutions at scale.
  • Advanced proficiency in one or more scripting/programming languages, with particular strength in Python and Robot Framework, and the ability to quickly learn and apply new tools and languages as needed.
  • Hands-on experience designing, developing, and executing automated and manual test cases, including defect logging, triage, and collaboration with development teams to drive resolution.
  • Experience using GitHub or similar source control platforms, including branching strategies, pull requests, and active participation in code reviews for others' work.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership, including mentoring less experienced engineers, leading technical discussions, and setting standards for scripting, test design, and code quality.
  • Strong collaboration and teamwork skills, with a proven ability to work effectively across functions, locations, and organizations and to influence without formal authority.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize work across multiple projects and programs, balancing near-term delivery with long-term automation strategy in a fast-paced, cross-functional environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical concepts, trade-offs, and risks to non-technical stakeholders and leadership.
  • Demonstrated integrity, accountability, and ownership mindset, including taking responsibility for outcomes, following through on commitments, and driving issues to closure.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a focus on root cause analysis, long-term corrective actions, and data-driven decision-making.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to operate test vehicles, as required for test activities.

What Can Give You a Competitive Advantage (Preferred Qualifications)
  • Experience with automotive software platforms and diagnostic tools (e.g., Vehicle Spy, INCA) and a strong understanding of in-vehicle network communication and data logging.
  • Extensive experience with test automation frameworks (especially Autobot, Robot Framework, and Python) and automation of vehicle-level tests.
  • Proven experience integrating automated tests into CI/CD pipelines and lab automation environments, including configuring triggers, reporting, and failure analysis workflows.
  • Full vehicle integration or end-to-end validation experience across multiple modules or domains, with the ability to anticipate cross-system impacts and dependencies.
  • Track record of driving process improvements and standardization that have measurably improved efficiency, stability, or coverage in test and automation workflows.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and uplift others, including building training materials, leading workshops, or acting as a chapter/discipline lead for automation.
  • Strong ability to clearly communicate risks, blockers, and trade-offs, and to influence decision-making among technical and non-technical partners at multiple levels of the organization.
