What is script writing?

Script writing is the process of creating written works that outline the dialogue, actions, and directions for productions such as films, television shows, plays, or video content. Script writers develop the story structure, characters, and settings, ensuring that the script conveys the intended message and emotions. This process often involves multiple drafts, collaboration with directors and producers, and adherence to specific formatting guidelines. Script writing is crucial for guiding actors and production teams in bringing a story to life.

What are script writing jobs?

Script writing jobs focus on creating general written content for the production of a video. This could take the form of a screenplay, copywriting for an advertisement, or even content for a video game. As a script writer, your job is to help deliver the story that your client wants to tell. To accomplish this, you decide the best way to deliver the content, create a storyboard to pitch the idea, and then write the actual script. Script writers are often given a lot of freedom when creating content, so creativity is crucial to your success. Script writing jobs also take place in a deadline-driven environment, so the ability to finish your work on time is essential.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a script writer, and why are they important?

Creativity, adaptability, and the ability to collaborate and accept feedback are crucial soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure compelling, well-structured scripts that meet industry standards and resonate with audiences.

How do script writers typically collaborate with directors and producers during a project?

Script writers often work closely with directors and producers throughout the development and production process. After submitting a draft, writers may participate in meetings to discuss revisions based on creative direction, budget, or logistical constraints. Open communication and flexibility are essential, as scripts frequently evolve to align with the director's vision and production needs. This collaboration ensures the final script serves the story while being feasible to produce, offering writers valuable insights and professional growth.

About List25

List25 is one of YouTube's longest-running list-style channels, entertaining millions of viewers with fast-paced, fact-packed videos. We cover everything from history and science to pop culture and the bizarre — and we're growing fast. We need a sharp writer who can keep audiences glued from the first second to the very last frame.

The Role

You'll own the words that drive our videos. That means researching topics, writing punchy scripts, and editing them until every sentence earns its place. You understand YouTube's attention economy and know how to engineer a hook that makes people stick around — and come back.

What You'll Do

  • Write and edit engaging scripts for list-style YouTube videos (800–5,000 words)
  • Craft irresistible intros that hook viewers in the first 30 seconds
  • Structure scripts to maximize audience retention throughout the video
  • Research topics and fact-check content for accuracy
  • Collaborate with our production team on titles, thumbnails, and pacing notes
  • Revise scripts based on performance data — you're always learning what works

What We're Looking For

  • Proven experience writing scripts for YouTube — please include channel links or samples
  • A master of the hook: your intros make people forget they were about to scroll away
  • Deep understanding of retention — you think in loops, payoffs, and pattern interrupts
  • Fast, clean writer who can hit a deadline without sacrificing quality
  • A sharp editor — you cut ruthlessly and every word has a reason to be there
  • Bonus: familiarity with List25's style, or experience in the list/trivia genre

Nice to Have

  • Experience analyzing YouTube analytics to improve future scripts
  • Background in journalism, copywriting, or broadcast writing
  • Passion for trivia, history, science, or pop culture
