What is a script writer?

A script writer writes a script for a movie, television show, commercial, play, or broadcast. Specific job duties vary depending upon the project, but often involve developing the story idea, creating an outline, generating dialogue, separating the script into acts, and working on character development. Some writers adapt a previous work into a new medium, like a book into a film. Other writers create a script from scratch.

What does a script writer do?

A script writer is responsible for creating scripts for various forms of media, such as films, television shows, video games, and commercials. Their job involves developing storylines, writing dialogue, and structuring the narrative to fit the intended format. Script writers often work closely with directors, producers, and other team members to refine the script and ensure it aligns with the overall vision of the project. They may also revise scripts based on feedback and production needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a script writer?

To thrive as a Script Writer, you need strong storytelling abilities, excellent command of language, and a solid understanding of narrative structure, often supported by a degree in writing, film, or related fields. Familiarity with industry-standard screenwriting software like Final Draft or Celtx is typically required. Creativity, adaptability, and effective communication are vital soft skills that help writers collaborate with directors and producers. These skills ensure scripts are engaging, professionally formatted, and tailored to specific audiences and production needs.

How does a script writer typically collaborate with directors and producers during the development process?

Script writers often work closely with directors and producers to refine the narrative, dialogue, and pacing of a script. This collaboration usually involves participating in meetings, receiving feedback, and making revisions to ensure the script aligns with the overall vision and practical constraints of the production. Open communication and adaptability are key, as script writers may need to adjust scenes or characters based on director input, budget considerations, or casting changes. This teamwork helps create a cohesive story that is both engaging and feasible for production.

Script writers' salaries vary based on experience, industry, and project scope. Entry-level script writers typically earn between $30,000 and $60,000 annually, while experienced professionals can earn over $100,000 or more, especially in television and film. Description & Requirements

Bloomberg Opinion is seeking a Vertical Video Producer and Editor for a 12 month contract role based in Washington D.C. to join our global team of columnists and editors.

We're looking for a social-minded video journalist to work with our US columnists in all aspects of the editorial process – from idea generation and script writing to directing video shoots and post-production. You’ll bring dazzling ideas for opening hooks, an eye for great visuals, a competitive spirit, strong news judgment and an irrepressible excitement for what’s happening in social video and how we can develop our audience. You will also bring in skills as a live stream producer to curate and coordinate regular live webinars broadcast on Bloomberg Opinion’s social channels from X to TikTok.

This is a hybrid role that would involve flexibility to regularly conduct video shoots in and around Bloomberg’s DC bureau.

Requirements

  • At least 2 years of experience using video editing software like CapCut and/or Premiere as well as the Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop, After Effects and Illustrator

  • Experience in using graphics software including Canva and Figma

  • A newsroom metabolism: Strong news judgement, a background in journalism and the ability to work within tight deadlines

  • Strong knowledge of and active use of social media platforms including TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, X, LinkedIn and BlueSky

  • Experience in using live streaming software like StreamYard, Restream, Twitter, TikTok and YouTube

  • Portfolio/showreel preferred and an editing task will be required

Responsibilities

  • Produce short-form videos on a daily basis that combine your mastery of script-writing, video editing and directing talent for camera

  • Work with our columnists to highlight their expertise in video form to break through to our core Bloomberg audience, and, crucially, new audiences on video platforms like TikTok and Instagram Reels

  • Produce engaging live stream webinars with a panel of columnists from an online studio broadcasting to social channels

  • Innovate new ways of turning often complex opinion columns into digestible content for a social media audience: experimenting with explainers, voiceovers, data and trends

  • Collaborate with columnists and editors on best practices of social video and turning abstract ideas into engaging video content

  • Create other content targeted for social and digital platforms including video and graphics editing, as well as some written content
