Job description

General Statement of Duties Under direction, performs skilled interior and exterior painting of buildings, and fixtures; refinishes furniture and wood paneling; performs related work as directed. Acceptable Experience and Training Graduation from high school or possession of a GED; and Two (2) years of experience as a journeyman painter; or Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work. Required Special Qualifications Possession of a valid State of Iowa Motor Vehicle Operators License or proof of equivalent mobility.

Ability to wear approved respirator equipment during spray painting operations. Candidates for positions in this class must pass a post-employment offer background check, physical examination, and drug screen. Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only) Prepares surfaces for painting by scraping, burning, washing, sanding, and by filling nail holes and cracks; mixes and matches paint, and otherwise prepares it for application.

Removes graffiti. Applies paint including epoxy and other toxic finishes, varnishes, stains, lacquers, and enamels to a variety of building and fixture surfaces by brush, roller, and spray equipment. Estimates time and materials needed.

Matches old and new woods. Marbleizes wood to match adjoining marble surface. Glazes wood to give multicolored grain; replaces broken windows; uses silk screen technique; hangs coverings; tapes and finishes dry wall; installs and finishes plaster.

Cleans and maintains brushes and other painting equipment. Stains and finishes office furniture. Performs related duties such as erecting scaffolding, removing or covering objects to protect them from splattered paint, and cleans up work areas when job is finished.
