Scrap Inspector
Charlottesville VA
Job Summary
Gerdau is seeking a safety-focused and detail-oriented Scrap Inspector to join our team. In this role, you will receive, process, and visually inspect incoming scrap materials to determine grade and quality according to established procedures and specifications.
This is a hands-on position that requires strong attention to detail, communication skills, and the ability to work safely in an industrial environment.
What You'll Do
  • Inspect incoming scrap loads and verify contents against supplier documentation.
  • Determine whether materials should be accepted, downgraded, or rejected based on quality standards.
  • Document non-conforming materials and apply appropriate deductions.
  • Identify environmental and safety hazards, including batteries, gas tanks, cylinders, and other stored-energy devices.
  • Utilize handheld scanners and SAP to accurately process supplier loads and maintain inventory records.
  • Direct truck traffic and coordinate unloading activities with crane operators.
  • Monitor loads for potential fire hazards.
  • Use handheld radiation detection equipment when required.
  • Communicate effectively using radios and hand signals.
  • Ensure all drivers follow company policies and safety procedures.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
  • Assist operations and maintenance personnel as needed.
