What are the main challenges faced by a scopist in their daily work?

One of the main challenges for a Scopist is maintaining accuracy and consistency when editing lengthy and complex transcripts that often include specialized legal terminology and multiple speakers. Scopists must also manage tight deadlines, especially when working with several court reporters simultaneously, and ensure that all client-specific formatting preferences are correctly applied. Additionally, the role often requires working independently and troubleshooting technical issues with transcription software. However, strong organizational skills and effective communication with court reporters and other team members can help mitigate these challenges and lead to a successful workflow.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the scoping position?

To thrive as a Scopist, you need excellent grammar, punctuation, and editing skills, often supported by specialized training or coursework in legal or court reporting fields. Familiarity with transcription and court reporting software like Case CATalyst or Eclipse, as well as a solid understanding of legal terminology, is typically required. Strong attention to detail, time management, and the ability to work independently are valuable soft skills in this role. These skills ensure that transcripts are accurate, professionally formatted, and delivered in a timely manner to clients, which is essential in the legal industry.

What is scoping?

A scoping job involves editing and formatting legal transcripts for court reporters. Scopists use specialized software to review rough transcripts, correcting grammar, punctuation, and formatting while ensuring accuracy based on audio recordings and reporter notes. This role requires strong language skills, attention to detail, and familiarity with legal terminology. Scopists work closely with court reporters to produce polished, final transcripts efficiently. Many scopists work as freelancers, offering flexibility in workload and schedule.

Job description

About Louisville Handyman & Remodeling

Louisville Handyman & Remodeling is a premier provider of high-quality handyman and residential remodeling services across the Louisville area. We pride ourselves on delivering exceptional craftsmanship, transparency, and a customer-first experience on every job, from minor repairs to full-scale home renovations. Our mission is to be the name families can count on for quality, integrity, and a home improvement experience that feels seamless and trustworthy.

Why This Job is Important

The Project Developer / Estimator is the first critical touchpoint in our project development process and the foundation of project success. You don't just generate numbers; you translate a homeowner's home challenges into a project with a viable, detailed plan. Your ability to accurately scope the work, manage client expectations, and secure the contract ensures our production team has the clarity needed for smooth execution, directly safeguarding our profitability and our reputation. You are the driving force that brings clarity, structure, and confidence to our homeowners' home improvement journeys.

Key Responsibilities

Client Consultation & Sales:

  • Conduct in-home and virtual consultations with qualified leads to deeply understand client goals, site conditions, scope of work, and budget for handyman jobs and remodeling projects.
  • Present proposals to homeowners, address questions or objections with clarity, and secure signed contracts to meet defined sales targets. We are there to be our customers’ trusted home advisor, not just to sell a job.
  • Educate and guide clients confidently through the decision-making process with a high-integrity, consultative selling approach.

Estimating & Scoping:

  • Perform detailed review of site and proposed project scope, including taking measurements and pictures, translating client needs into comprehensive scopes of work.
  • Develop fixed-price estimates based on breakouts for labor, materials, and equipment. Projects will range from smaller-scale handyman repairs up to small scale residential remodels. Our estimates on the handyman side of our business range from $350 to $40,000.
  • Source and validate material pricing, and negotiate favorable terms with vendors and subcontractors.
  • Generate and manage change orders, documenting all revisions and client decisions clearly.

Project Handoff & Administration:

  • Utilize and maintain accuracy within our estimating and project management software (e.g., JobTread, Buildertrend, or similar) for all client interactions, revisions, and proposals.
  • Collaborate closely with the Production Manager and / or Craftsmen for a seamless handoff of sold projects, providing complete scope, cost data, and scheduling details.
  • Conduct post-project reviews to confirm quality completion of project, compare estimated versus actual costs, approve bills and continually refine estimating templates and processes.

Qualifications

Experience (Required):

  • 3+ years of experience in sales, estimating, or construction management within the handyman / remodeling industry.
  • Proven history of meeting or exceeding goals and building strong client relationships.
  • Confident ability to perform site visits and project assessments, and understand general construction methods, sequencing of work, and materials.

Skills & Attributes:

  • Persuasive Presenter: Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to build trust and close contracts. Comfortable discussing budgets and navigating financiel conversations with customers.
  • Detail-Oriented: High attention to detail for accurate estimates and proposals.
  • Technical Proficiency: Broad construction knowledge. Comfortable with estimating software.
  • Self-Motivated & Accountable: Strong time management skills to juggle multiple estimates and deadlines; fast follow-through.
  • High Integrity: Leads with empathy, professionalism, and a genuine passion for helping homeowners.
  • Strong Team Player: Comfortable giving and receiving constructive feedback. True passion for being a part of a team that is supportive of each other and cares about helping everyone do great work.
