How much do scientist metabolic engineering jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 12, 2026, the average yearly pay for scientist metabolic engineering in the United States is $98,759.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $78,000.00 and $116,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are Scientist Metabolic Engineering?

Scientist Metabolic Engineering are professionals who design and modify the metabolic pathways of microorganisms or cells to enhance the production of specific substances, such as biofuels, pharmaceuticals, or chemicals. They use techniques from molecular biology, genetics, and systems biology to optimize cellular processes. Their work often involves analyzing metabolic networks, engineering genes, and testing new strains to achieve desired outcomes. These scientists play a crucial role in biotechnology, sustainability, and industrial applications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Scientist in Metabolic Engineering, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Scientist in Metabolic Engineering, you need expertise in molecular biology, biochemistry, and metabolic pathway design, typically supported by a PhD in a relevant field. Familiarity with genetic engineering tools (e.g., CRISPR, plasmid construction), bioinformatics software, and analytical instrumentation such as HPLC or GC-MS is crucial. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective collaboration make candidates stand out in this research-intensive role. These competencies enable the development of optimized biological systems, driving innovation and success in biotechnology and industrial applications.

What is the difference between Scientist Metabolic Engineering vs Biochemical Engineer?

AspectScientist Metabolic EngineeringBiochemical Engineer
Required CredentialsMaster's or PhD in Bioengineering, Biotechnology, or related fieldsBachelor's or Master's in Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, or related fields
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, biotech companies, academiaIndustrial manufacturing, process development, research facilities
Industry UsageFocus on designing and optimizing metabolic pathways in microbes or cellsFocus on designing and scaling biochemical processes for production

While both roles involve biochemical processes, a Scientist Metabolic Engineering primarily focuses on developing and optimizing metabolic pathways in biological systems, often in research settings. In contrast, a Biochemical Engineer emphasizes process design and scale-up for industrial production. Both roles require strong backgrounds in biotechnology or chemical engineering and are vital in biotech and pharmaceutical industries.

How does a Scientist in Metabolic Engineering typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a research project?

As a Scientist in Metabolic Engineering, you will frequently work alongside molecular biologists, bioprocess engineers, and data analysts to design, execute, and optimize metabolic pathways. Collaboration often involves regular meetings to align on experimental goals, sharing data and insights, and jointly troubleshooting technical challenges. This multidisciplinary teamwork ensures that engineered strains meet both scientific and production requirements, speeding up development cycles and improving outcomes. Effective communication and project management skills are essential for navigating these collaborative environments.
