Job description

Position Title: Environmental Health Intern - Fall 2026
Department: 3280 Environmental Health
Classification: SEATMP - Seasonal / Temporary
Employee Type: INT - Intern
Direct Report: Senior Manager, Environmental Health
Position Summary
Our Environmental Health Lab focuses on analyzing and monitoring air, water, and light in the various habitats of the aquarium. This internship provides hands-on experience with laboratory procedures, equipment calibration, usage, and maintenance. Interns will gain practical experience in water quality analysis while developing technical and analytical skills, preparing them for careers in environmental science, chemistry, or related fields.
Responsibilities:
  • Perform laboratory tests on water samples to measure parameters like pH, Salinity, Alkalinity, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, Phosphate, etc.
  • Perform Bacteriological test, interpret results, identify trends and report non-compliance issues.
  • Operate and calibrate various laboratory and field equipment (pH, Salinity and DO probes)
  • Assist as needed in specialized testing, such as HPLC, IC, light, and air analysis.
  • Recording, organizing, and analyzing data.

Qualifications:
  1. Successfully completed a general chemistry course, including a school laboratory component, or an equivalent.
  2. Basic knowledge of water quality parameters, analytical techniques, and laboratory equipment operation.
  3. We are looking for someone with a genuine passion for the environment, a strong interest in science, a commitment to animal welfare, and enthusiasm for laboratory work.
  4. This is an experience-based, paid internship.
