Job Duties:
The Environmental Health and Safety Specialist (III) serves within the department of Risk Management and serves as the Chemical Hygiene Officer for campus.
  • The position ensures laboratory safety programs that will result in safe and healthy work environments for all employees and students.
  • The position oversees implementation of, and compliance with, the UWSP chemical hygiene plan (CHP) for all departments/units with laboratory operations.
  • This position reviews industry standards, and confirms institutional compliance, with all Federal and State chemical and laboratory safety regulations through auditing of academic and workplace environments.
  • The CHO recommends and implements measures to reduce or eliminate industrial accidents and health hazards in compliance with all applicable regulations.
  • The position overseeing the chemical hygiene programs ensuring compliance with NIH/OBA, CDC, DNR, EPA, OSHA, and other granting agency requirements.
  • It is the responsibility of this position to serve as the UWSP Chemistry Department's Chemical Hygiene Officer and offices primarily within this department.
  • The position provides consultation to other campus units with laboratory functions and chemical related needs.
  • The position chairs the UWSP Chemical Hygiene Committee, conducts routine laboratory inspections, and supports the hazardous waste program.
  • The position will work as part of the environmental health and safety team and will operate with limited supervision.
  • This role is expected to make independent decisions on matters of compliance and safety as a .5 FTE annual appointment.

Key Job Responsibilities:
  • Designs, develops, and executes risk-related trainings and educational programs
  • Implements and administers major risk management program functions such as property, liability, auto, and/or worker's compensation
  • Provides professional expertise in the identification, assessment, mitigation, control, and monitoring of risks
  • Accomplishes identification and analysis of risk-related issues, responds to risk-related inquiries, and assists in the operational functions of investigations
  • Analyzes and evaluates information obtained from risk-related investigations
  • Develops final recommendations and implements solutions for risk-related issues and events, and audits the impact of proposed solutions and resolutions
  • Conducts data analytics and develops associated professional reports

Department:
The UWSP Risk Management department aims to protect the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point from various sources of loss or damage that could affect overall stability. This office works in conjunction with UWSA Office of Risk Management to administer loss prevention with the goal of preservation of assets and protection of personnel for the successful continuation of campus operations and promotion of a safe environment. The Risk Management department provides guidance and assistance to our campus community to ensure a safe and healthy environment for employees, students, and guests.
Compensation & Benefits:
The Environmental Health and Safety Officer is a 0.50 FTE, salaried, exempt, annual (12-month) position.
Well-qualified candidates can expect a starting annual salary within the range of $30,000 - $40,000 (at 0.50 FTE) commensurate with the candidate's education, related experience, and qualifications.

Required Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated knowledge of principles and practices pertaining to chemical hygiene and safety and to environmental health and safety in general.
  • Four-year degree in a related major in physical science, chemical science, environmental science/engineering, occupational safety, industrial technology, or closely related science; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of regulations, trends, and best practices related to chemical hygiene/safety.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain productivity expectations with little supervision.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge of principles and practices pertaining to chemical hygiene/safety to better ensure regulatory compliant research.
  • Advanced applied knowledge or education in chemistry.
  • Experience in/with a higher education setting.
