What is a science content writer?

Science Content Writers are professionals who create written materials that explain scientific concepts, research, and discoveries for a variety of audiences. Their work can include articles, blog posts, educational resources, reports, and content for websites or social media. They often translate complex scientific information into clear and accessible language, making science understandable and engaging for readers who may not have a technical background. Science Content Writers may work for media outlets, educational organizations, research institutions, or as freelancers. Their role is crucial in bridging the gap between scientists and the general public.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a science content writer?

To thrive as a Science Content Writer, you need a strong background in scientific concepts, excellent research abilities, and proficiency in written communication, often supported by a degree in science or journalism. Familiarity with content management systems (CMS), SEO tools, and citation management software is typically required. Attention to detail, creativity, and the ability to translate complex information for diverse audiences are standout soft skills. These competencies ensure accurate, engaging, and accessible science communication that meets both educational and editorial standards.

How does a science content writer typically collaborate with subject matter experts during the content creation process?

Science Content Writers often work closely with subject matter experts (SMEs) such as researchers, scientists, or professors to ensure content accuracy and clarity. This collaboration may involve conducting interviews, reviewing draft materials, and seeking feedback to simplify complex scientific concepts for a broader audience. Effective communication and the ability to translate technical information into accessible language are essential skills. Writers may also participate in team meetings or brainstorming sessions to align content with organizational goals and audience needs.

Job description

Who we are…

Nuvation Bio is a biopharmaceutical company tackling some of the greatest unmet needs in oncology by developing differentiated and novel therapeutic candidates. Our vision is to significantly change the practice of oncology by developing medicines that provide truly meaningful improvements in quality of life and survival for people with cancer.

What you’ll be doing

The Associate Director, Publications and AI Integration will be responsible for using their scientific and medical writing expertise to develop and deliver quality medical content projects and publications. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced medical writer seeking professional growth and progression within the biotech space. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong scientific acumen, be adept at cross-functional and external stakeholder collaboration, have strong scientific writing skills, and demonstrate proficiency in project management.

This individual, under direction of the Director, Publications and Medical Strategy, will act as the medical writer for abstract submissions, congress presentations, and journal articles supporting lung cancer and glioma. They will execute internal and external author reviews and submissions to congresses and/or journals, following all internal SOPs and adhering to Good Publication Practices. This individual will need to be familiar with ICMJE/GPP guidelines and current publication ethics standards. This position will play a leading role in shaping how the team uses AI responsibly in content creation. This includes advising on the evolving landscape of AI-assisted information sharing by healthcare providers and contributing to the broader publications and AI strategy, under the direction of the Director and Executive Director of Medical Strategy.

Additionally, this individual will be responsible for using their medical writing expertise to deliver well written, researched, and scientifically rigorous FAQs, advisory board content, and other medical communications projects, for the full pipeline of company products. Additional responsibilities will be identified based on team and business needs.

You will be responsible for…
  • Support the development of highly credible scientific content for congress presentations and peer-reviewed publications
  • Develop high‑quality scientific content including medical slide decks, scientific narratives, advisory board materials, literature summaries, and medical FAQ documents
  • Serve as a strategic contributor to the team's publications and AI strategy, partnering with the Medical Strategy Leadership to shape how the function adapts to AI-driven changes in scientific information-seeking and sharing
  • Monitor and advise on trends in how healthcare providers and other stakeholders use AI/LLM tools to access and interpret medical and scientific information, translating these insights into actionable publication planning
  • Support strategies to ensure company scientific content is accurately represented when accessed via AI tools (e.g., structured abstracts, open-access deposition, indexing practices), balancing discoverability with compliance and scientific integrity
  • Stay current on evolving guidance from ICMJE, GPP, and journal/publisher policies regarding generative AI use in authorship, content development, and disclosure, and ensure team practices remain compliant; ensure all deliverables meet regulatory, compliance, and publication‑quality standards
  • Bring forward-looking, big-picture thinking to how AI reshapes publication planning and medical content strategy, rather than executing AI use case-by-case
  • Work closely with Medical Strategy to ensure alignment of content with core scientific narrative for Nuvation Bio’s products
  • Lead multiple projects at once and ensure work is developed and delivered on time
  • Demonstrate a high level of comfort articulating scientific and therapeutic information in lung cancer and neuro-oncology
  • Actively support new business opportunities by researching scientific literature
  • Contributing to additional scientific communications initiatives as the pipeline evolves and organizational needs shift.
What Knowledge & Experience you'll bring to us...
  • Advanced degree (MD, PhD, PharmD) in a medical or science-related specialty, although significant experience in the medical writing field may be considered in lieu of an advanced degree
  • 3+ years in medical communications agency, biotech, or pharma required
  • Experience in medical writing, content creation, or medical communications required
  • Lung or neuro-oncology experience highly desired; oncology experience required
  • Have knowledge of ICMJE/GPP guidelines and current industry standards for compliant use of AI to support publications and medical content generation
  • Ability to work independently with strong sense of accountability and ability to execute
  • Strong project management skills, attention to detail, and sense of urgency
  • Familiarity with publications review systems is preferred
  • Ability to travel to Nuvation Bio Headquarters and professional congresses as appropriate (<20%).
