Position Summary

Education Luminators are part-time, hourly museum educators who play a key role in delivering a welcoming and engaging experience for all guests at Kiewit Luminarium. They facilitate exploration and learning through interactive exhibits, science demonstrations, and other educational programming, while helping to ensure a fantastic visitor experience for people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. This role is ideal for individuals who are passionate about STEM education and enjoy interacting with the public in a dynamic and creative environment.

We are hiring multiple Education Luminators to join our collaborative team dedicated to inspiring curiosity and supporting meaningful learning experiences for all guests.

Compensation & Schedule

The wage for this position is $19/hour. Education Luminators are expected to work approximately 15 to 20 hours per week, with the potential to work up to 30 hours per week based on availability and operational needs. Schedules vary and may include weekdays, weekends, evenings, and holidays. Preference will be given to candidates who are consistently available to work as many of our high-priority shifts as possible. These include weekday mornings, Wednesday and Friday afternoons/evenings, Saturdays, and Sundays.

Essential Functions

• Facilitate science demonstrations, Maker Space activities, on-site field trips, exhibit interactions, and other educational programs on the museum floor for guests of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds, using strong public speaking and guest engagement skills.
• Initiate informal conversations with guests to deepen engagement and share information about exhibits, programs, and events.
• Deliver exceptional guest service by answering questions, providing wayfinding assistance, and supporting visitors with special needs or concerns.
• Support special events by helping on the museum floor and assisting with tasks such as moving exhibits and furniture, and setting up or tearing down decorations and activity materials.
• Assist external collaborators conducting educational programming onsite at the Luminarium.
• Maintain exhibit spaces and program areas by organizing materials, restocking supplies, and ensuring cleanliness and safety.
• Support emergency response procedures by guiding guests to appropriate resources and personnel.
• Represent the museum at off-site community events by setting up, presenting mobile activities, and interacting with diverse audiences.
• Actively participate in ongoing training, team meetings, and professional development opportunities with a willingness to learn, grow, and continuously improve.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Museum Experience Manager, Education Manager, or Educational Associates.

Education & Experience Required

• A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Candidates pursuing or holding an associate, bachelor’s, or graduate degree in education or a STEM field are preferred.
• Demonstrated interest in education, STEM, social sciences, and/or creating positive visitor experiences.

Necessary Qualifications

• Available to work a variable schedule, including weekdays, weekends, evenings, and occasional holidays. Preference will be given to candidates who are consistently available to work as many of our high-priority shifts as possible. These include weekday mornings, Wednesday and Friday afternoons/evenings, Saturdays, and Sundays.
• Enthusiastic about engaging with guests of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds in STEM learning and hands-on exploration.
• Excited to learn new skills, grow professionally, and gain experience in education, science communication, guest engagement, and museum work.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with an outgoing, friendly and professional demeanor.
• Comfortable with public speaking and facilitating conversations with individuals and groups.
• Excellent customer service skills, with the ability to respond to guest needs and questions with empathy and clarity.
• Willingness to work collaboratively as part of a team and adapt to changing priorities throughout the day.
• Reliable, self-motivated, and able to exercise good judgment while working independently or with moderate supervision.
• English proficiency is required; bilingual skills (especially Spanish) are a strong asset.
• Must be authorized to work in the United States and be able to obtain a valid work permit.

• Ability to frequently move throughout the museum and remain on the floor for extended periods during shifts of up to eight (8) hours, with scheduled meal and rest breaks, while performing the essential functions of the position.
• Ability to move from place to place and lift/carry up to 40 pounds short distances.
• Ability to perform position functions and must be willing and able to work on-site, in shared indoor and outdoor space with staff and the public.
