What is a Science Animation job?

A Science Animation job involves creating visual representations of scientific concepts, processes, or data to make complex information more engaging and understandable. Science animators use 2D or 3D animation, illustrations, and motion graphics to communicate ideas for educational, research, or commercial purposes. They often collaborate with scientists, educators, or media producers to ensure accuracy and clarity. This role requires both artistic skills and a strong understanding of scientific subjects. Science animators work in academia, media, museums, healthcare, and corporate environments.

Does Disney still hire 2D animators?

Disney has significantly reduced its hiring of traditional 2D animators as the company shifted focus to 3D animation and digital techniques. However, some opportunities for 2D animation roles may still exist in specialized projects or legacy animation departments, often requiring proficiency in software like Toon Boom or Adobe Animate. Job seekers should review current Disney job postings for specific openings related to 2D animation.

What are the typical responsibilities of a Science Animation professional on a daily basis?

Science Animation professionals are responsible for creating animated visuals that explain scientific concepts, processes, or research findings in an accessible and engaging way. On a typical day, you might collaborate with scientists, educators, and subject-matter experts to interpret technical information, develop storyboards, and produce high-quality animations. You will likely use industry-standard animation software, revise content based on feedback, and ensure scientific accuracy throughout the production process. The role often involves working as part of a multidisciplinary team, balancing creativity with the need for clear and precise communication. These daily activities help make science more understandable and appealing to broad audiences.

What is the highest paid animation job?

In the field of science animation, senior roles such as Lead Animator or Animation Director tend to have the highest salaries, often exceeding six figures annually. These positions require extensive experience, advanced skills in animation software, and a strong understanding of scientific concepts to effectively communicate complex ideas visually.

Is animator a high paying job?

Animator jobs can offer competitive salaries, especially for those with specialized skills in 3D modeling, visual effects, or experience with industry-standard software like Maya or Blender. Salaries vary based on experience, location, and industry, with experienced professionals in entertainment or advertising often earning higher wages. Entry-level positions tend to pay less, but with experience and a strong portfolio, animators can achieve higher earnings.

What jobs can I get with a degree in animation?

A degree in animation can lead to roles such as science animator, medical illustrator, or educational content creator, where skills in visual storytelling, software like Adobe After Effects or Maya, and understanding of scientific concepts are essential. These jobs often involve creating visualizations for research, education, or public outreach in scientific fields.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Science Animation position, and why are they important?

To thrive in Science Animation, you need a solid foundation in animation or motion graphics, a strong understanding of scientific concepts, and typically a degree in animation, graphic design, or a science-related field. Experience with animation software such as Adobe After Effects, Blender, or Maya, as well as familiarity with storyboarding and visual storytelling tools, is typically required. Excellent communication, attention to detail, and creative problem-solving skills set top candidates apart. These competencies are critical to effectively translate complex scientific ideas into engaging and accurate visual content for diverse audiences.

Job description

At Netflix, our mission is to entertain the world. Together, we are writing the next episode - pushing the boundaries of storytelling, global fandom and making the unimaginable a reality. We are a dream team obsessed with the uncomfortable excitement of discovering what happens when you merge creativity, intuition and cutting-edge technology. Come be a part of what's next.

The Opportunity

Vine Studios is Netflix's LA-based Series Animation production facility, offering collaborative review spaces, premium offline edit bays, a scratch room, and a screening room. Our Production Services team acts as the primary point of contact for engineering and technical operational support for productions at Vine Studios, helping shows navigate production and post production challenges from development through delivery, and partnering with our broader engineering teams to resolve issues that require deeper technical expertise. As the team grows, we're looking for a Senior Production Technology Engineer to provide hands-on technical support and ensure productions get consistent, high-quality service.

The Role

The Senior Production Technology Engineer provides hands-on technical support to productions at Vine Studios, troubleshooting issues in real time and keeping specialty rooms, edit bays, and screening rooms running smoothly. This role works directly with production and post production executives, producers, and creative teams day to day, and requires the ability to translate complex technical issues into clear, actionable guidance for creative and production stakeholders. It also partners closely with Media Systems and Production Engineering teams, escalating issues that require deeper technical expertise. The ideal candidate brings strong post production and production support experience, is comfortable working directly with creative stakeholders under pressure, and can bridge technical and creative conversations with ease.

Responsibilities:
  • Provides day-to-day technical support across specialty rooms, edit bays, and Editorial for Netflix Series Animation at Vine Studios, including on-site preventative maintenance and calibration to ensure optimum performance

  • Troubleshoots and resolves technical issues in real time, assessing urgency against production context and escalating appropriately

  • Identifies recurring issues and contributes to root cause analysis, helping to reduce repeat incidents and improve support efficiency

  • Works directly with production executives, post production executives, editors, and production creatives across active shows, maintaining regular proactive touch points to stay ahead of issues

  • Supports facility projects at Vine Studios including specialty room refreshes and edit bay upgrades, in coordination with Media Systems and Production Engineering teams

  • Partners with engineering stakeholder teams to evolve tools, platforms, and workflows for production and creative pipelines - evaluating software needs and flagging solutions to production stakeholders

  • Partners and collaborates with the in-house VFX Manager to provide additional pipeline support and color workflow guidance for productions and creative artists working remotely and at Vine Studios

  • Coordinates with internal tech support teams that handle initial production support, stepping in when issues require more specialized troubleshooting

  • Provides technical context and details to Media Systems and Production Engineering partners to support Tier 2 & 3 escalations

  • Supports screening room scheduling and usage across productions; helps maintain operational readiness for screening and review room support

  • Translates technical issues and options into clear, understandable guidance so productions know what support is available, how to escalate, and what to expect

Qualifications:
  • 5-10 years of experience in production or post engineering and/or production technology at a post production facility or studio

  • Post production and production support experience with deep knowledge of production and post-production workflows - including non-linear editing, color science, VFX, and audio mastering

  • Knowledge of the technical and artistic fundamentals of animation and VFX, including 2D and CG pipelines

  • Strong relationships and hands-on knowledge of key industry manufacturers, their tools, and software, such as Avid, Adobe Premiere, Foundry, and SyncSketch

  • Understanding of networking (switched IP protocols, DNS, ports), network storage, and workstation architectures and how they relate to and optimize production and post-production workflows and media management

  • Experience across Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems and workstation hardware (GPUs, memory, etc.), along with the Google Tool Suite

  • Strong ability to translate complex technical issues into clear, understandable language for creative and production stakeholders, building collaborative relationships and working well across cross-functional teams

  • Calm and decisive under pressure or in ambiguous situations - thinks on your feet and owns problems through to resolution

  • Stays current on emerging production and post production technologies; flags relevant developments to the team
